To receive HD channels from your cable service you will need to have a special HD box. Most company's offer a box that will receive HD channels for around $10-20 more per month. Most HD boxes are much more advanced than normal cable boxes and have built in recorders to record your favorite programs also.
It's also important to note that most cable company's offer HD channels but you usually have to pay more for them, so if you don't already pay for HD channels you will probably have to pay a bit more to access them.
I would also like to add that most cable company's do not offer full 1080p HD service as of yet due to bandwidth constraints in the wires. So even with HD programming you most likely will not receive 1080p signal but rather 720p or 1080i (which are both HD).
Hopefully this has helped you.

You will need one of the following:
Satellite HD.
Cable HD.
BT Vision.
Freesat.
Freeview HD (if you live in a region that can receive Freeview HD).
All Blu-Ray players are "full HD" by the way. There is no such thing as an "HD ready" Blu-Ray player...

If you are looking to watch mainstream HD television channels then you will need a HD set top box

Well if yor in the UK you need to do one of the following:
Buy a freeveiw HD box (you will need a digital aerial to receive signal)
Buy a Freesat box and dish
Subcride to Virgin Media and their V+ box
Subcribe to Sky and their Sky HD box
You will need to ensure you are supplied or purchase HDMI cable to connect these devices to your TV to ensure the HD signal in transmitted to the TV

If you live in the UK you need a good aerial and to be near a transmitter carrying Freeview as it will soon be carrying HD
