What is a cheap alternative to buying a $50 TV cover for my outdoor TV?

Maybe you could make one yourself. Just sew a square out of a table cloth that is "coated" in plastic. Or if you can't sew, just tie the table cloth around the t.v. for protection. That might even be more water proof. I always try to home make stuff before paying an arm and a leg and what you make is always more sturdy.

A grill cover might work. The website below has all kinds of covers so you can probably find something that would work. Hope this helps.

Go to Home depot and get some blue tarp and some string and you are all set.

Go to a military surplus store. Perhaps you can get an oversized poncho and fasteners. Should do the job for waterproofing. If you go to a military surplus store the item that you purchase will do what it is supposed to do and will take a great amount of abuse, if you think about it.
