I like watching tv in my room at night but my TV plays SO loud that my house mates get annoyed. I turn it ALL the way down to the minimum but it is still so loud. Is there a way i can change this in the settings or if i buy some external speakers will they help me control the volume more ?? thanks

I assume you have unplugged it and left it awhile. If you use different remotes for different functions try the volume on the others. It is likely that this is a hardware failure. If it is a fairly recent digital model (90s on) if you have the access code to the service menu you can change any setting in the set--but easier said than done.

One answer is to buy a pair of comfortable headphones, which will give you extra high fidelity as a bonus. Be sure it has a volume control but almost all do. It is on a long wire, although they probably do make them wireless. with the right equipment.

If customer support or the owners manual could not tell me how to do this, I would open up the TV and put a potentiometer in series with the speaker wire using wires so the pot (variable resistor) would hang outside the TV so I can easily adjust the volume. Watts and resistance are important for a pot but not voltage. Shooting from the hip I would choose a 20 watt 10 ohm pot. You can get or order what you need at Radio Shack. Price should be less than $20.

Thats not very likely at all, unless you are actually getting the sound from a receiver and speakers somewhere, and the TV volume control has nothing do do with where the sound is coming from. So, either the TV is broke, or you are confused. Most modern TVs also have something called a "Night Mode" to flatten out the annoying overdone "Dynamic" nonsense movie scores seem to like so damn much. Using that mode can make a difference..

you have a faulty volume control, it should go down to zero. If TV has headphone socket, try headphones that have their own volume control. Or get your TV mended.

Could look in setup menu for audio settings. Once found try lowering the tone (both treble & bass) settings to just over half way.

You really need to tell us what make & model television you have and what device (cable, sat, etc.) is sending signal & what type of wires you are using to hook them up.

Without this information - we might suggest solutions that would never work for you.

Many people would use headphones in that situation (i.e., if they want to watch TV late at night, without bothering people).

What audio outputs does the TV have? Or give us the model #

If the TV has the proper audio output you can use headphones
