I lost my tv remote for my 20MC4304 Magnavox TV/DVD/VCR combo. Is there a cheap way to replace it? What's the thing about codes for remotes? And how hard is a new remote going to be to program?

You have two choices.

Either you buy a replacement remote from Magnavox ( I would go back to where you bought the TV and see if they can order it for you) or you buy one of the many universal remotes.

However, the problem with universal remotes is that they have limitations. Most inexpensive universal remotes only have the buttons for the commonly used features such as power, channel changing, volume control and for DVD's and VCR's playback, fast forward and rewind. You probably won't have a way to get to the menu screen and possibly won't be able to program the VCR either. There are much more capable remotes that would probably do all the things you need but they are expensive > $100!

As for your question about codes for the remotes. The codes are used to tell the remote what type of equipment you have so that it will know what type of signal to output to control your TV/DVD/VCR combo unit. To program a remote you look for your equipment in a list that comes with the remote. Next to it should be a three or four digit code. With that code and the programming instructions for the remote you will tailor the remote for your set. You should also know that not all remotes work with all equipment. If your particular TV isn't on the list there is a possibility it won't work.

If you want to ensure that the remote you get will allow you to access all the features of your old one the only way to guarantee that is to buy a replacement remote from the TV manufacturer.

The cheapest way is to get a universal remote. BEFORE buying it though, make sure the buttons on your new remote let you do everything the old remote did! An important feature is the menu button. Some cheap universal remotes don't have this, and you'll need it for the TV. And also make sure it will switch from the TV to the VCR to the DVD. And another thing you can do, is go back to the store you bought your TV, give them the TV model, and they can give, or order you, a new remote.

If you have an android smartphone with IR you can use android app. I have Samsung TV old model, but it works. I've used this one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ir.totalcontroller.
