Although I'm fairly tech-friendly when it comes to computers, my head is spinning from all the HDTV advice out there. I'm simply looking for an HDTV with the best picture and most reliability for the lowest price. Could someone please break it down into the simplest terms for me?

Plasma has the best picture qualities!

They have the highest native contrast ratios(40,000:1), giving them the blackest blacks and most vivid and rich looking colors! They also have the fastest response times(.001ms) and fastest refresh rates(600hz), making them the best at fast motion content like sports, movies and gaming!

Plasma's are also the most affordable HDTV per screen size and no longer have problems with burn-in or energy consumption. For more info and facts, see this website: http://www.plasma-lcd-facts.co.uk/

However, you didn't specify what size range you are looking for. This is an important factor when searching for TV's. Plasma TV's don't come in sizes smaller then 42", so if you're looking for something 40" or less...LCD is your only option! Go with these brands of LCD; Panasonic, Samsung, LG, Sony, Sharp or Toshiba.

However, if you are looking for something 42" or larger, i highly recommend going with a Panasonic Plasma TV. Panasonic is the best performing and most reliable brand of HDTV i've ever seen!

Here are some recommendations for you:

With that kind of budget, Plasma has to come into your consideration. So you need to do the Plasma vs LCD decision.

LCDs have problems with fast motion. They suffer from motion blur (ghost trails). To compensate they offer models with 120Hz or 240Hz refresh rates. This helps a lot, but its not 100%. Also, its a "advanced" feature so it costs extra $.

CCFL LCDs (most) deliver somewhat muted colors, grey-ish blacks, and so-so contrast. This is compensated for with the LED LCD. The LED light source delivers vivid colors, truer blacks, and deeper contrast. Its not quite Plasma levels, but its a significant upgrade. But this is another advanced feature, so you have to pay more $.

Plasmas have a near instantaneous response time (0.001ms). They playback fast motion flawlessly. Plasmas also deliver vivid colors, true blacks, and deep contrast. All of this is inherent to the technology, you're not paying extra for anything.

The biggest myth about Plasma out there is that it suffers from burn-in. Buy a good brand, and you don't have to worry about this. Just be cautious and condition it. For the first 20-50 hours no gaming. For the first 100-200 hours keep the brightness and contrast cranked way down. Then optimize and use it for whatever you want.

Panasonic Viera Plasmas are rated to 100,000 - 110,000 hours. They will easily last you like 20 years of high end image quality. They are really the premiere option you can buy right now.

For that budget, I would recommend the Panasonic VIERA G10 Series TC-P42G10 42-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV for $891 on Amazon. Its quite possibly the best 42" TV period in the marketplace. The G and V series by Panasonic are their flagship lines. And you can find that model from retail stores as well. Look to a place that will price match Amazon though, so you know you're getting the best price.
