Most new TVs have audio out which is used to connect to a "sound bar". TVs that have these audio outputs have either right/left RCA outputs or a 3.5mm jack (like for headphones - which you don't have).

This is only half the issue, because even if you do have the RCA outputs they may be "fixed" volume (which is full volume) used to feed a receiver / amplifier with a volume control. Some TVs have a menu option to make the audio out jacks have a "Variable Audio Out" and in that case the TV volume control will work with the connected amplified speakers.

If you have "fixed" audio out, you could look for an amplied 2.1 speaker setup that has a volume control - some higher end computer speakers have this.

Check the TV manual for what outputs it supports.

Most HDTVs will support some sort of digital output (like optical audio) for connecting to a surround sound receiver or soundbar that supports surround sound.

Some TVs still have stereo outputs in the form of the red/white RCA jacks. Again these can be connected to a soundbar, a stereo, a surround sound receiver, or to a set of speakers that have their own amplifier built-in, such as computer speakers but these may not be powerful enough for your room.

Never say "I am going to buy" (anything) until you Know for Certain

that What you want to buy will work with what you Already Have.

Read The Owner's Manual for the TV.

If it does not show how to connect the TV to an external audio system,

it won't be possible.

You dont.

HDTV sound is 5.1. This is why HDTV's no longer have stereo or headphone output jacks. This would miss 3 speakers worth of sound.

You want to buy a 'soundbar' and make sure it is one that accepts Optical from your HDTV. The budget models only accept stereo for older standard-def systems.

The better sound bars have small subwoofers as well.

usually there is OPTICAL audio output on tvs ...

if the speakers has optical audio input .... use an optical cable.

if there is rca audio input ... you need a converter.

Go back to the store and show then the tv, and then see which system will be best for the tv you purchased.
