I am wanting to mount a 40"ish Flat Screen on my wall 3M away from the sofa. I want both sound and picture quality to be great.
I have a window behind my sofa and the TV will be under an arch.
I thought an LCD was the best but the chap in the TV shop has given me the hard sell on a Panasonic Plasma!!! HELP

Heh...I think it's funny that people are telling you to go one way because that's the way they went or "I have one". This is a completely unbiased answer. In your situation, LCD is the best way to go, and here's why. The fact that you have a window behind the couch that's going to give DIRECT light to where tv goes ELIMINATES plasma all together. Plasmas reflect light like crazy due to the glass pane over the screen. You will get so many glares it will be almost impossible to see what's on tv during the day. LCD screns don't get nearly as much glares (althought they still get some) as a plasma. Not only that, but their screens are much brighter and viewing them in daylight will be much easier and you'll get a clearer picture. Now, if you don't do any daytime TV viewing, I would choose a plasma. In a darker less lit room, you'll get a bit better picture quality with a plasma, deeper blacks and less motion blur than an LCD. Whichever you choose, you'll get great picture quality, itj ust depends on when you view. Personally, I prefer LCD to plasma (I own both a plasma and an LCD TV) But it's really a personal preference that will change from person to person. Don't let the salesman push you into buying anything. Compare for yourself, pick the one YOU think looks better and what's best for you. Hope this helps!

He's giving you a hard sell as it probably costs more then the one you originally wanted. LCD t.v's work better in brightly lit rooms so if light from your window will be hitting the screen it won't interfere with the picture. LCD's are also lighter then plasma's as they have no back but plasma's are a bit deeper so they are slightly heavier to wall mount. 40" is a good size but make sure the contrast ratio is high as if it's low the picture quality won't be that great.

I have an LCD 32" and the quality is very good. In the shop the t.v's on display should be switched on so you can see which one is better picture and sound quality but I would personally go for an LCD.

I had the same question some 6 month's ago and used AVFORUMS to assist. Basically, for 42 inch and above, a plasma is best. Also an LCD can not produce the 'blackness' required by some pictures. Wrt SCreen burn, plasma technology is such that this rarely happens unless you get a real cheapie one and if it does then it disappears reasonably quickly. You have made a good purchase with the Panasonic, I bought the TH42PZ70 for my home cinema system and its brilliant both in HD mode and standard signal. Enjoy knowing you right !!

The advantage to an LCD is that it can't have any burn in which is nice if you are a gamer. I do know that some LCDs have a screen door effect were when some one moves it is delayed so there is the image of when they moved and one before they moved. My grandfather just got a new Toshiba and it has had no problems plus there is no glare.

Plasmas are cheaper but still are able to burn in and they are thicker than LCDs there are some plasmas that have quality as good as an LCD

I have a "40 full HD 1080p samsung lcd and it's about 2.5m away from sofa, an i'll tell you the HD quality while watching blu-ray is unbelievable. Plasma can never have such a clear picture it might have a better contrast ration but lcd rule

and lcd works the best in a bright room
