The initial colour TV test transmissions were made from the Crystal Palace transmitter in June, 1962.
The first colour programmes were broadcast by the BBC in early 1967. Regular colour transmissions began in July of that year.
By September 1968, there were over 100,000 colour televisions in the U.K.

Colour Tv became popular at the early 70s and late 60s

The first British TV channel in colour was BBC2 in the mid-1960s, I think around 1965. There were just a few hours in colour each evening to begin with.
Colour was only ever transmitted in the UHF band on 625 lines.
Until around 1970 the other channels, BBC1 and ITV, were only transmitted in the VHF band on 405 lines, which never had colour broadcasts. As soon as these channels began on UHF, they too were in colour.

Yes, 1967 is right. I remember they existed in 1966 because England won the world cup, and it was in colour if you were rich enough to have a colour telly. See you round Paul's for a pie and a pooh.

I've just asked my husband (54) and he says colour tv became popular just after
the World Cup of 1966 , so probably your husband is right
although remember, not everyone would have one as they'd be too expensive

Yep, I remember them in 1967 and I think a bit before. My folks had a black and white about 1950.
