Have a local installer come and remove it. You can find one here:
The satellite installer can remove the dish and repair the roof by sealing in for about 50 bucks

As the previous responder said, Direct does not want the outside equipment back, they see the installation as an incentive you to get their service. They will charge you the same installation charge regardless if the equipment is there or not. It there are still receivers, I would strongly suggest that if you considering using them to make sure that their are not charges due on them as you will assume the responsibility for the bill. As to removing the dishes, just do it and fill in the holes with a caulk or silicon seal.

If the antennas are mounted into the roof I would just leave the base and remove the mast and dish so you dont have to seal the holes left in your roof. With siding you could just seal the holes with caulk or wood putty. With older equipment Directv doesn't care with new equipment it is leased and they would probably want it back. Give them a call.

Anyone can get them activated on an existing account they already have. As long as they are not stolen you will be fine. People buy them at garage sales and online all the time. I am currently using 2 i bought second hand and it only cost $20 to get cards for them from the company.
