I recently discovered that I could connect my ASUS laptop to my Sony HD TV. I have Windows 7 and I wen't through all of the steps (changing the display settings and all of that) but nothing shows up on my TV. I right click and select personalize. I hit " Change display settings" and select the second monitor (the Sony TV) set the resolution to the recommended numbers make sure landscape is selected and click extend these displays. I do all of that and no picture shows on the television. None of the little icons at the bottom of my screen (Google Chrome, Start, Skype, etc.) don't show up on my computer monitor. There's no sound coming from the computer speakers either (which I think is supposed to happen, but since it won't connect properly to the television, no sound comes from there either.
I have no idea what could be wrong and I really would like to be able to do this.

I had the exact same problem, conntect the HDMI cable into the computer then the TV now you have to change the sound settings in the controll panel.

Steps:

Click on Start

Go to Controll panel and Open it

On the very right corner click view by large icons if it's not already.

Scroll down and look for sound, and click on it.

Now at the top you should see some HDMI Device mine says AMD HDMI Output.

Click on this and click set defualt then click ok.

Now you should have sound.

This fixed my PC to TV sound through a HDMI cable, I hope it fixes yours.

All the best,

Turn off the computer. Connect the HDMI cable to the TV and

the computer. Then turn on the computer. Windows should see the TV when the computer boots.

Try using "mirror" mode instead of extend.
