My mom told that starting next year that all tvs need to be digital. I'm starting saving my money now so I can have a new tv by the end of the year. My question is this: If I buy a tv that has HDTV is this the same as digital or will I need to actually get one that says digital on it? Will people that work @ places such as Target or Wal-Mart know which tvs will work next year?

Next year ANALOG TVs will not receive OVER THE AIR broadcasts from TV stations and will need a digital receiver box. The government will issue coupons for those folks who don't have newer DIGITAL TVs with appropriate tuners (to purchase the box at a reduced price).

Don't get confused between standard definition, high definition, and digital. If you already receive your TV reception via cable or satellite, you don't have to worry about it as they will continue to support your SD sets.

When you buy a TV it will have the specs listed for it. Make sure it says "DIGITAL" or "DIGITAL TUNING".

High Definition ("HD") is different and is another feature that you will pay for. HD televisions look crappy with standard cable and broadcasts and only look good when receiving an HD signal (via cable, Over The Air, HD or Blu-Ray DVD, and satellite). I know this because I have two 46" Samsung HD TVs that I have not gotten HD reception for as of yet. But get digital HD TV and you'll be happy you did (esp if you have an Xbox 360 with Hi-Def output - HALO 3 is just simply AWESOME!)

Its not as bad as it seems.

If you have cable that uses a separate box, like Comcast Digital Cable, or have satellite TV, you don't have to worry about anything. Or if you have a TV with an ATSC Tuner (which all new LCD/Plasma/HDTVs have), you are fine. But if you have an old fashioned TV, which would be a TV with only an NTSC Tuner, you can get a new TV or Digital Cable/satellite, but there is another option. You can get an external box that will convert digital signals so you can watch them on an old TV. Here is a link:

http://www.amazon.com/ATSC-QAM-NTSC-Tuner-Receiver/dp/B000V8XR1U/ref=sr_1_232?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1199659238&sr=1-232

This is an external tuner that can read digital signals for your old TV.

Wait there. Yes all HDTVs are digital. But if you use cable or satalite then you do not need a new tv. You only have to get a digital tuner (40.00) and that is if you still use rabbit ears. And you can get it at this website for free with a coupon (2) free.

short answer: purely your cable corporation is accustomed to for confident. long answer: The 2009 date purely applies to over the air announces. Cable agencies have plenty greater flexibility in how they take care of the transition to DTV. on a similar time as cable agencies are required to maintain presenting analog television indicators till a minimum of 2012, many are switching to all digital indicators and presenting converter packing boxes to purchasers with older TVs. those converters are in many situations provided via the cable corporation. they are not a similar with the aid of fact the cheap over the air converters which will look next year. As for the different solutions you won: --------------------------------------... the 1st 3 are clueless The fourth is right if your cable corporation alterations that's common cable to a non-encrypted QAM digital gadget. (no longer a confident element) each and every little thing interior the 5th answer is right, I do exactly no longer comprehend what his factor is.
