If you don't know how to diagnose and repair delicate electronics, i would leave this up to the pros because you could end up hurting yourself or do more damage!

The cheapest/best way to go about this is to take the board in question to a repair shop and have them repair it!

I'm guessing the problem lies on the Main Input or Power Supply board(or maybe both). A bad resistor will discolor the circuit board around it. On-board resistors cannot be replaced! They can only be bypassed(jumped) or replace the whole board!

Capacitors look like mini pop cans...usually black. They can blow and will have a bulged top, leak from their top or bottom OR so no signs at all! In which case, only testing the circuit they are on will tell if they're bad or not!

If you can't find any damage, you'll need to take the whole TV in for repair. Or the two boards that i mentioned, at the very least!

Good luck.

A blown or burned resistor gives off a pungent carbon smell and badly discolors the circuit board around it. But a capacitor that goes open can show no physical symptoms at all.

Try your set with different inputs to make sure you don't have an external problem: antenna, cable or satellite box, DVD player, game box; whatever you have. Also try different cables. If the problem only appears with a certain input, you've found the culprit. But if it's with everything, a low budget repair might be out of reach.

If your cable box is connected with a regular coax cable (single black one), verify that the television is tuned to the correct channel. Usually channel 3 or 4 on the TV. Obviously you are already familiar with changing inputs with the remote since you verified the dvd and others are working. Most likely a party guest tried to change the channel with the TV remote instead of the cable box remote. Take care.
