An HDTV Tuner will only work on an HDTV-READY television set. So, no it won't work with a regular old analog set. It will work with the new SDTV that show 'digital' but not HD. I'm getting HDTV now and let me tell you, it's AWESOME! The picture is almost 3-d. The sound is a true Dolby Digital 5.1 that you just can't get over analog signals. Now my tv viewing equals my dvd viewing. As for prices, tvs are very cheap right now. Even HDTVs. They'll continue to get cheaper. But when the time comes when the FCC shuts down the analog signal, you better believe prices will shoot right back up! That's when you'll have to switch weither you want to or not. Right now, HD is still competing with Analog at stores. When there's no more competition they'll be able to charge more. So don't wait until the last minute. Do it as soon as you can.

No. I seriously doubt analog TV really will shut down in 2009.

But in any case, the plan all along has been that HDTV tuners will be available to consumers who want to keep using their old TV with the new HDTV service.

Mind you, I've never seen an HDTV tuner box or anything of the sort in an electronics store. I guess they will be provided by the cable companies if/when they actually make the switch to full HDTV service.

The Federal Government understands that certain individuals do not want to switch over to the new HDTVs. They as of now are recommending a $40 given by the US government to cover a partial purchase of a box that will basically be an ATSC tuner box. If her tv lasts that long she would probably qualify. Also, the reason HDTV is here is because the Government needs the Analog lines for Emergency broadcasts for Police and Fire. This is another reason Cell phones have gone digital.

HDTV's are the future of home entertainment. all the analog tv's r gonna be a junk surely till 2010. in america already 40-45% of the tv sets have been turned out to be HDTVs. they have high definition displays and are better for eyes than analog TVs. it is better to buy an HDTV till 2008-09 when they get cheap and inexpensive.explain its advantages to ur mother. she will surely buy a new one till 2008-09.

If you're not using an antenna then nothing will happen. Only people using antenna's will have any problems if they don't have an HD antenna and tuner. If your using cable or sattelite then nothing will happen as you will continue to recieve your signal the same way.

You only need to update if you get your signal from a antenna, if you use cable or satellite their set top box will convert the signal for you.
