I've got a new computer that no longer has an S-Video plug, so I can't connect it to my TV anymore. I still have an older TV with RCA input, but I'm thinking of getting a DVD player with HDMI. Since my computer has HDMI, can I connect my computer to my DVD player, and then connect the DVD player to my TV to watch movies from my computer? A cheap upscaling DVD player is a far cheaper option than a new TV.

The HDMI port on a DVD player is an output, not an input, so that wouldn't work.

You will need to get a HDMI to RCA converter like this one:

I cannot answer your question, but I could make a suggestion:

Get either a PCI tuner card (ATSC) or, do what I did and get a stand alone TV TUNER BOX with hdmi/ dvi I/O, and component video output too. The 100 dollar tuners (ATSC) are very versatile and they turn any monitor or old CRT into an amazing TV ready for the new digital era!!! I consider this the best 100 bucks I have ever spent.

With my tuner box, I can plug the computer and the monitor into my tuner box and with the toggle of a switch, I can go from PC image to TV (high def broadcast). The image on my monitor is amazing. The image on my old CRT is jaw dropping!!!

The only caveat is that you can only use these tuner box (stand alones) with OTA antenna or Cable.

good luck

I doubt that would work, I've never seen a dvd players with that functionlity

you need a device to convert hdmi to s-video. They do exists but aren't cheap ....

or get a media center, the more expensive ones have the feature that you need.
