It depends of the tv brand and model you have.
There are USB adapters used for wireless internet connection if your tv is wi-fi ready (like LG),
Or also for a 3d ready tv's upgrading to 3d (these tv's usually have already built-in wi-fi and can access the internet straight out of the box).

According to the LG site the USB port is used for ....
photo(JPEG), music (MP3) and movie(DAT, MPG,
MPEG, VOB, AVI, DIVX, MP4, MKV, TS, TRP, TP) are supported.
