we just got a vizio smart tv and it sits on a electric fireplace but every time we hit buttons on the tv remote it turns on/off or changes the heat temp my fireplace!!! please someone help this is so frustrating!!!

You can't reprogram it - you can only cover over the sensor on the fireplace.
I've run into the same thing with a Lasko space heater I own. I'll be testing remote controls using a digital camera (you can see the light output with many point and shoot cameras) when all of a sudden, I have heat!
The reason is that the while the makers of electronics such as televisions and receivers do go out of their way to not copy signals - appliances like heaters, air conditioners, etc don't follow the same rules. Indeed you could grab a A/C remote and it might change channels on the TV or raise the volume on a receiver.

Wow! I guess I am not alone in this world. I was in the exact scenario as you are now. The smart TV after all is great but yes the remote control also messed with our fireplace. We love the TV so I guess that will not go. The tech guy I know also told me that you cannot tweak the remote control and change its frequency.
Our fireplace is quite old and abused since we live in near the mountains so we opted to change it with those ventless fireplaces you see in online galleries today. The installation was quick and it looks cool. So if you are in the same scenario as mine, I think you might also consider that. Or you might have to return the TV.

You could try programming a different remote to your tv. Kind of how DTV or Dish have their remotes that say TV, VCR. The signal might be a little different. So you don't have to use the one that is affecting the FP. Its worth a shot
