Question:
TV Normalizing Question?

So I bought the TV of my dreams

Sony Bravia KDL XBR 4 ... anyways so my quesiton is ---

How do I normalize the audio? I live in an apt building with people living above, below and on either side of me. I have found that when I am watching a movie at night (in consideration of my neighbors) I adjust the volume so I can hear the dialog but when an action scene kicks in its twice as loud. The same goes for watching TV at normal levels and then a loud obnoxious commercial comes on boosting the audio considerably. has anyone found a clever (an inexpensive) workaround for this? This seems to be a pretty relevant problem nowadays for most of us so I was hoping to get some good ideas from this site!

ps... no external speakers currently plugged into the TV

Thanks in advance...

A familiar problem. The fix is a nice set of headphones. If the TV has a headphone jack, any number of headphone models will give you outstanding binaural audio with no agitation to your neighbors.

If it doesn't have a headphone jack, not to worry. Get a stereo or surround sound amplifier that has a headphone jack, connect it to the auxiliary audio output from the TV, plug in the headphones, turn the TV audio all the way down. (This is what I do.)

If the TV is too far from your viewing position, you can get a headphone extender cable or use a wireless headphone set. (I have the cable; bought it at Radio Shack.)

what you are looking for is for products with Dolby Volume in it. comcast set top boxes have it in them. most tv home theaters have it in them. but im not sure if they have a little box.

for comcast here is how you do it

hit menu twice on the remote - setup - audio setup

audio output = advanced

compression = heavy

stereo output = matrix

optimal stereo = yes

thats what i have mine set to.
