I just bought a new laptop, and it only has HDMI and USB ports on it. I want to be able to watch videos from it on my TV. I know I can't connect the laptop directly to my analog tv using an HDMI-to-RCA cable, but can I connect from the HDMI port of my laptop to the RCA ports on my DVD player and get it to my TV through that?

Additional info: My laptop is an Acer Aspire M5 with windows 8, my DVD player is a Magnavox and it connects to my TV.

The simple answer is NO.

HDMI is a completely digital system; RCA connectors use completely analogue communications. Any cable with an HDMI plug at one end and RCA plugs at the other end cannot possibly work on its own. It won't work to your DVD player or to your tv set.

They are sold to people who want to believe that they can get a cheap and easy conversion, but they don't work unless you also buy more expensive "converters". Personally I would ban these leads from sale.

The only way that you can make your HDMI output from the computer work into the television RCA input is to buy a digital-analogue converter box. This is a small box of electronics with a HDMI socket on one side (input) and RCA sockets on the other side (output). Amazon sell them.

You don't need "adaptor" leads: all you need is an HDMI cable to connect your computer to the input of the box, and RCA leads to connect the output of the box to the tv set.

The Tank is correct. The cheap conversion boxes and cables will not work. I have tried many adapters and converters for many different customers, and I have only found one that will work ( I will link this below). However When using heavy duty converters sometime is may be better to just upgrade your equipment instead.
