I, myself, was tricked into buying a monster cable (4ft) for over 100 dollars. If I were to go back I would buy the typical cable for 30 bucks. The numbers are firmware versions. The higher the number, the more up-to-date they are and less likely to conflict with your device. My monster cable looks just as good as the one verizon gave me when installing my cable service.

In response to the answer below...I wouldn't get the CHEAPEST one...i saw a huge difference in one I bought at Sears, and the monster....but not a big difference in the monster and the cheap one verizon gave me. I would spend ~20 bucks on one.

The difference is the bandwidth of each version (1.4 being the latest one), which is basically the range of frequencies that can be used to transmit (more frequencies = more data = better image and sound).

In reality, you won't be able to notice the difference at all and paying $100 more for a nicer HDMI cable would be pointless

Keep in mind that HDMI cables are digital: the signal only shows 1's and 0's, so the quality of the cable doesn't really make a difference (Remember when simple USB cables used to be $50 at a store?).

I work at a electronics store. Cant say where and we get a discount where its 5% over actual cost of item. I pay $2 to $3 dollars for HDMI cables that cost around a hundred. Yes they are a rip off. Every store is going to tell you they arnt cause they dont make profit off TVs, they make money of accessory s they make themselves. Is there a difference yes, is the difference noticeable to the human eye, NO. Is there a difference between 1 billion dollars and 1 billion dollars and 1 penny. Yes. See my point. Buy the cheapest HDMI cables you can find. I bet you could get a pair of Ebay for like $5 dollars. Its pointless to pay any more
