Ok, technically, there is no such thing as a "digital aerial", only an aerial that is able to receive digital signals for TV or DAB radio. Nowadays digital compatible aeials receive both analogue and digital TV signal, and to receive digital Freeview TV pictures, you need one of these aerials and either a digital set top receiver or a TV with built in digital receiver. There are up to 34 digital TV channels, in the region of 30 radio channels and around 24 text and interactive channels in good reception areas.

A digital aerial is an antenna optimized to receive signals in the UHF band, which is channels 14-69. Today most digital and HDTV television signals are in the UHF band. In the future many of these channels move back to the VHF band which requires the same large, ugly antenna we've been using for the past 50 years, so it might not matter in the long run.

In the U.K. the digital aerial is required because all of their digital television is only on UHF.

If only we in the USA were so lucky--many of our channels move back to lousy VHF channels, making the digital aerial not very effective for us.

If you want to receive digital TV just try using your existing aerial.

If it isn't good enough then go to the expense of getting a digital compatible one.

My old TV aerial works fine with freeview even though it's a bit crappy with normal terrestrial TV signals

No such thing, an ariel will pick up both signals, the only reason they call it a digital one is to sell it, in some areas you have a weak signal and you would need a high gain ariel, these are the ones called (misleadingly) digital.

I get digital tv on a set top ariel at home.

same as your analogue aerial...its your digital receiver that makes the signal digital...take it away and its analogue again!
