I have two tvs in my house. one in my room and the other one in the living room. we cannot pay for an extra cable box or extra service. my mom is paying for basic cable in the living room where the cable box is. i was tired of not having tv so i hooked a splitter to the cable box and led it to my room to my tv. is this illegal? i only get basic channels, not nick or disney, or tnt, or cnn or any of those channels just local channels. the cable people tomorrow are coming to replace our broken cable box. i took out my cable from my room in the hole in the wall but the hole is there. can i get in trouble? is this illegal? please help! we are very broke and i cannot afford to pay extra..

to make it clear i cannot afford an extra cable box for my tv in my room so thats why i did this i only get LOCAL channels.

Um, no. First of all, you don't need a box for every tv with cable. That's an advantage of having cable instead of satellite TV.. in which case you DO need a box for every tv and it is impossible to split it. With cable television, you have access to a limited number of channels on a tv without a box.. usually because channels only go up to 100 on a tv. When they install and set up your cable and cable box, you should have mentioned and asked them to run and set up the wires so that you could have access to cable on another television set. Actually, they should have ASKED YOU.

They would probably have done this through the floors/walls for you. They take the main cable from which you're box is receiving cable television.. (this cable is usually hidden.. running from a main box outside up to your house or appartment) and installed a splitter there to give you access to cable anywhere else there is a tv, instead of directly from the box.. No! it's not illegal to split cable unless you're splitting it from somebody else's service that you are not paying for. Otherwise, like I said.. that's one of the advantages of cable.. you can access it in any other room that is hooked up properly.

I don't think it is...we have analog cable (no box) in our house and the cable company only set it up for 2 tv's, but we now have 4. We just took splitters and installed it to all the tv's. The cable guy's been over to our house on a service call and he didn't care, so I don't think it's a problem. Also, when we used to have Dish network, we only had it in 3 rooms, but I have 2 tv's in my room with only 1 box. So instead of paying extra for another box, I just took and split the cable coming out of the box. I could only watch the same channel on both tv's, but it still worked.

Ive done this a million times befor nothing bad will happen. All u have to do is unhook the plug from the back of the tv that is no longer working and the hook it back up the same way it was into a new working tv. cable guys are all liers and will say anything to get more money out of u. especially comcast.
