Better digital rights management. More specifically, if I record programming with my DVR, I should be able to maintain that program in perpetuity. I should be able to move it to my iPod, my laptop computer, a replacement DVR, archive and restore it on optical disks.

Custom TV packages. I pay for a package that I got because of one channel. It's ridiculous.

I would also like to be able to choose all the channels I get....I hate half the channels on my TV, but can't get rid of them. I'd like to pay for the channels I want.

It won't happen because of the revenue and etc. for the cable companies, but I'd still would love to see it.

also, HD is way too expensive.

A lot of people want to feed their HDTV from their computer. They want to watch replay episodes of TV shows if they missed them, UTube videos and AVW, WMV, MPG files they download from the internet or Torrent sites.

Some people hook a laptop up to the TV, but many people want to 'stream' stuff from their computer in another room to the Home Theater system.

channels that are grouped out better. for example, fox has shows that are comedy's , yet some are about murder.

they should have channels that base just around comedy, or all drama, or maybe even all reality t.v.. (that way people that hate reality tv can stay clear of it by not watching that channel)

also, like the person above said, t.v should use more senses... maybe we could touch something soft, or smell something on the food network.

and definitely, no commercials!

it would be supper cool if u could use dvr and tivo, but on TV shows that r happening as u watch them instead of pre-recording it. idk how that would happen, but it would sure be a plus

Technology has already started changing television dramatically over the past few years. We've all come to know and love our HD content, and I feel that will be the standard within the next few years. I also believe that TV as we know it will be On-Demand, 24-7. There are too many shows on at the same time, and DVRs don't always have the ability to record all 15 shows at the same time. I believe we'll be able to choose what shows we watch, and that the "regularly scheduled time" will be when it becomes available for live stream or download, something like what video games are these days.

This leaves a big gaping hole for advertisers. I believe that there will be in show advertisements, or scrolling advertisements during TV shows so that revenue continues to flow. DVRs are increasingly popular, and people fast forward those commercials more often than not.

I can also see television going solely broadband, where people download whatever shows they want, new or old, on the fly out of a database, much like On Demand movies are today.

Subscription fees for individual channels rather than packaging them together in bundles would be a nice change, seeing as I only watch about 15 channels anyway.

It would be nice if there was some moral in the TV programs and teenagers' shows weren't so stupid sometimes. These days a parent can not sit down to watch tv with a son or daughter without having some sex scene come up on the screen; tv shows, and movies would be better if there was something left to the imagination. The dirty words are not necessary either. Children tend to imitate what the see others do that they think is amazing. A child that sees people act stupid on tv with a background laughter will grow up to believe that acting stupid is funny. Also a child that watches a show where people laughs at other peoples' misfortune will grow to believe that is a good thing. Another thing is the unmoral influence that a gay show or gay scenes present to our society. When I see a gay scene on a show I change the channel and if that kind of scenes or shows are common on that channel I block it.

Now about technology, I like the option to choose what program to watch. I also like the option that Bright-house has to restart a program or to rewind a scene. One thing that would let you know how people feel about a tv show or the programming is to have an option to give an opinion about the show in progress. Not just a yes or no question, but also a why. One thing I do not like is the raising of the volume during the commercials; I have to keep muting the tv during the commercials. I pay a high price for the tv provider then half the channels charge for viewing a program; thats no good
2008-09-16 12:13:13 UTC
TV programing should be a thing of the past. They should just put the stuff on and we can watch it when we feel like. I record a bunch of shows and I can't tell you what day of the week they're on or what time. Sometimes I don't watch a show for a week or two after it says it was originally on. Most of the time I watch on the weekend when I have time. I fast forward through all the commercials and I NEVER watch live TV anymore. I don't want to waste my time watching commercials.

I want to use this space to complain about the coverage of the Olympics by NBC. It was almost impossible to figure out when something was on TV. I had to record every single instance of when it was on and then fast forward through hours of stuff to find what I wanted. Plus the coverage that was shown was poor at best. It seemed like all they want to show was the US and the Chinese all the time and nothing else. Coverage should have been available on TV and the internet at any time. The coverage on the internet was TERRIBLE. Yes, you could watch a particular event, BUT there was no commentary or sound. Very poor!

I also think that TV's, the internet, and the cable box/DVR should be more integrated. Possibly into one unit, but have that unit have the ability to take the components out when something is not working correctly, yet still have the rest of the components work. Say the cable box is not working. You should be able to remove that part and have the TV still work and be able to connect an external cable box if need be.

On the same note with having the computer as part of the TV. It should have a wireless keyboard with mouse like on a laptop. Similar to that thing Sony used to make I think in conjunctionn with Microsoft and MSN.
2008-09-16 11:08:23 UTC
How will technology continue to change television?

More bandwidth and faster speeds means higher definition is possible (in sound quality as well).

Separate channel subscriptions should be easier. Instead of subscribing to the 200 channel package, a viewer should be able to subscribe to just the channels he/she wants. I understand this is already in place with some subscribers but the cost shouldn't be higher for this!

Will regularly scheduled programming become a thing of the past?

To an extent, this will most likely happen. Even today, scheduled program has become more synonymous with a "release date". If a show comes on first at a specific time and a specific date, people understand they can record it and watch at a later date, or go online to the network's website to watch.

r Discovery Channel that are about technology, history, science, stuff that actually matters and changes peoples lives like genetics and automotive history. Shows like The Universe, Gangland, Evolve, When We Left Earth, and Project Earth, not a group of people moaning like cows on a reality show that doesn't help me know new medicines or why some countries are the way they are etc. Most of TV is about stuff that doesn't contribute in anyway to anyone or changes anything, therefore it's not entertaining because it's superficial and I don't get anything out of it. Most network TV shows are the same as they've always been for decades except for reality TV which is rather new but is not really reality because you get dumber just watching it.

I would sooner watch 101 Cars You Must Drive or Modern Marvels, it actually has an effect on real life like what cars are better than others to buy or the Travel Channel and places to go, but yeah, American Idol or Heroes really comes to use... I could really use that..... if it was Star Wars or Scarface now that's entertainment but pathetic crap like Prison Break and America's Next Top Model

Well in 2009 they will turn all t.vs into digital meaning regular analog television wont work so any teli after 05 is good and i think t.v will soon be all HD and maybe 3d vision shows but i mean some people will never want it to go that far but i personally want technology to advance, and television is one of the many things that will change not later by as we are speaking someone is coming up with brilliant ideas, I mean when tivo was first introduced people said "wowza"! Now if you get dish network you get a receiver which is better than tivo and so low at cost. Perhaps t.v will be like computers with a really nice start up screen. Where you have a menu and on the menu there are links which take you to your recordings, your regular broadcasting, News, and maybe a link to buy videos. Well that's what i think and there are many other great ideas here.

Actually my husband and I are considering cutting the satellite feed as we find ourselves watching less and less.

100 channels and nothing on.

The writer's strikes of the past 30 years have made television programs go down in quality. The shows get worse as time goes on as too many executives make decisions about what the writer's should write instead of letting the writers do their jobs and write out the stories.

Technology has already made it easier to get 24 hour programming, yet even infomercials don't really effectively use their given time or money to put on a more than average quality program. There are millions of people ready for better programs - look at the wild success of the History Channel and Discovery Channel and their popular documentaries when everyone thought the documentary was dead! There is a guaranteed captive audience each night from 9-11PM, why not take advantage of it and produce real quality programs instead of cheap reality shows? But executives are stuck on the idea that people only want to see reality shows, stupid game shows, and poorly written comedies. Luckily a few dramas with good writing are changing the scene and adding more interest to the night.

Technology is no good without good writers starting with good stories. "Star Wars" was never about the future technology - "Star Wars" was always about the story of Luke Skywalker. Technology was there, sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. People go to Disneyland and never think how the sound and music is coordinated with the parades as they progress down the street because the speakers and technology is hidden so as not to distract. It's not about the technology used to make the fireworks shoot on cue, it's about seeing the fireworks shoot on cue as part of a good, well-written show.

Until tv producers and executives work to make it better, we will choose to tune out.

computers are going to be more connected. It's been hinted at, especially with Apple TV, but I think at some point in the next 20 years, televisions will become the new desktop. I think there will be a point where the programming gets turned to the viewer. Instead of just watching whatever is on TV, you choose what you want to watch. You buy individual episodes of TV, which are then recorded onto your computer/TV for you to watch anytime. Television ads will have a much shorter and possibly no involvement in this as networks can make money from shows just from selling it directly. This will also change the television business. Networks won't judge shows by the way critics see it, or how many viewers they guess watched it. They will have a direct financial income from a show allowing them to know whether it is successful or not.

How will technology continue to change television? Can not in vision too much change in the hardware of television, but the ability to select programing will keep changing.

Will regularly scheduled programming become a thing of the past?

There will always be regular scheduled programs (News, Sporting Events Magazine, New Series etc.), However Commercial Television will change in the same way pay per view movies are available you will be able to subscribe to a full series and purchase a season at a time this will give the viewer the chance to view any episode any order any time same as can be done on computers now. people get tired of trying to follow a series with so many choices of programs as you inevitably will miss a episode from time to time.

Much more control over what you can watch when you are available to watch it!

Also when you surf the channels it will always be at the beginning of the show as well pause and play will exist but you will NOT have to PRESELECT what is RECORDED just select program and view any episode and any part any time just like selecting a book from the library.

One other feature will be random access that will show trailers of shows that you may not know that exist. You can select from new choices or have television find similar shows you have already watch or select choices completely different from your usual venue. Allowing you to select programing you would other wise be unfamiliar with or add a category and find the programing specific to your watching desires!

People will want to tune in to regularly scheduled programming to be current and up to date for somethings and specials that will be only shown at a specific time and not available to view for a certain length of time. With anytime viewing it will be possible to watch the specials and not miss your favorite programing or disrupt the sequence in which it is watched.

I am still waiting for a complete connection between internet, self and television broadcasting. For me, the viewer, to have an actual type of interactivity and influence on the storyline, the character development, etc. I realize that there will always be limitations, but I think that the viewer needs to gain more control and in effect become more interactive with the shows that he/she watches.

I also can't wait to see when programming is a thing of the past, I turn on the television and pick what I want to watch and can have a playlist set up, kind of movie like.

Another thing that is starting to change, that I am enjoying is that television is becoming a more cinematic experience, with shows like Fringe and 24.

I want 3-D television, and stimulate my smell, touch and taste, i want it to float around and follow me so i can watch it anywhere, etc. But realistically i think that televisions that are curved like in the I- Max theaters would be cool, maybe include 3-d glasses for some shows. Also (not sure if this has been made) having some computer features put on the tv, such as youtube, face book, myspace, or a search engine to find shows or movies in the future. though eventually the computer and tv will become the same thing practically. I can also see people able to buy things from those commercial channels on their tvs. Hope i see some of these changes in my lifetime

Well, I would agree with a lot of the other people who answered so far ON:

1) You can incorporate the technologies that reproduce scents (a.k.a. smellovision)

2) Shows will be interactive.

3) Commercials won't come in between programmes or in the middle of shows. They would have a bar horizontally or vertically for you to click on advertisements you need.

4) You can have all the shows you want and all the channels you want without any hitch and store them with an intergrated DTV converter and recorder with the TV.

But you know what would really make a big difference to television? Replacing the screen with an effective, proper-working 3-D holographic projector. Why see a quality show flat when you can have it in pure crisp three-dimensions? The shows would be so real you though you are in it as well. And if you are making interactive shows that correspond to built-in interacitve technology, it would be a big bonus for the industry. What do you think about THAT, hey?

1. Why not just make TV with everything on it at the same time? Imagine, just type in the show, type in the episode, and, BOOM! You're watching exactly what you want to watch at the exact time you want to watch it! A say you subscribe to the show, it tells you when there's a new episode! Also, while you're browsing through the content, the commercials appear there, so there's no commercials in between the shows! It could be sort of like you tube, but with every single show ever recorded and aired on television!

2. Maybe someday the world will have BHDTV. Beyond High Definition TeleVision. All shows broadcast at 100% clearness.

3. You should also be able to smell and touch what's going on. You can smell food, touch your favorite celebrity, interact with the shows! That's definitely something I want to see.

4. TV should be free for everyone!! (If you don't like the last part then that's fine).

EDIT: Actually, you know, I don't watch TV that much. Only like 1 hour a week. But if you want to go ahead with the idea it would be cool.

How about some decent programs for a change? In the earliest days of television there were some creative and well-written programs. (I'm speaking of around 1954-56 time frame.) Television played to a very short schedule, ran three to five hours of entertainment programming, news and a movie. Then it signed off for the night.

I think TV would serve us best if it served us less and emphasized quality and good taste. These have been frightfully lacking in recent years. I have almost totally given up on television as a result.

When it comes to television, I'd like to see a channel you can program yourself. I envision going online and using drop and drag blocks to fill in your ideal schedule from a mix of syndicated and first run television, blocks of music videos, and movies, with the option of paying small premiums for "event" programming. It's a natural extension of cable & satellite, but why have 500 channels when you rarely watch more than a few? Why change your schedule around television when the ability is there for television to be molded to your schedule? Cult hits would find a new home, advertising could be preserved - possibly even targeted to specific audiences. It would be great if the major networks and studios could work together and with independent, but I think I could put together a satisfactory channel from what Hulu.com offers, or Comcast On Demand.

There has already been a big split in entertainment. It seems that even those who claim to be Christians are against murder or even a killing in wars! The problem is that we do not even accept that murder is always wrong, but killing to save others is not! This has been implemented by the ACLU and others that amount to only about 12% of Americans. They control our Supreme Court system using our tax money and this happened through certain individuals and contributions from Communists affiliates.. There is not real right or wrong! I'd like to see TV go back to the OLD entertainment formats -- where shows actually had CONTENT, story lines, plots and BELIEVABLE Characters ... where the Stupidity is gone (there is nothing that I like about current programming choices -- it is just that AWFUL ... and makes the Weather Forecast look like the winningest program of all time) ... Where we are not confronted by RACIST, Nasty, Vile talking and just plain abominable images ... and where we CAN CHOOSE to pay for those channel we WANT (and STOP being forced INVOLUNTARILY (via the Cable or Satellite Bill) to pay for such trash as MTV, VH1 or any of those other junk channels.

You know -- after getting the Rocky and Bullwinkle DVDs -- there was so much substance there -- so many lessons in morality and living ... the 'cartoons' today can't even begin to touch the shadows of these former greats.

TECHNOLOGY will go forwards -- more wireless .. more choices, bigger bills --

BUT .. until we CHANGE those who are there 'selecting' the TRASH That is being programmed -- I WILL (along with many others) be keeping the TV OFF (except for Weather Reports and Hurricane/Storm Reports!).

When TV entertainment exists no more, when we have a world where everything is possible, may be we could use a high technology computer that we plug ourselves into while we sleep and realistically walk amongst a 3D universe with graphics so realistic, we are almost really there, where dreams seemingly and virtually become living, where TV is no longer on a TV. 3D TV in dreams would most probably enable you to game for real, social network virtually, and be apart of a TV programme or watch it in a nearby audience.

But back to modern life, within the next few years, I hope TV will still be in streams, but also available in randomisation of categorically select forms alike a TV stream, but you select what kind of stuff you want for that channel, make your own TV channel out of programmes that are currently live and/or pre-recorded from a vast library of all-you-can-want programmes, and even a non-stream television format, that's just a library.

I currently use Virgin Media and I can select programmes on demand, and I'd like to be able to select programmes on demand in a larger number, that way, you would be able to do what you want when you feel like it, and you'd feel free, and TV channels should still be there when you don't want to choose, or don't have time to choose. And make your own TV channels, randomisations, category select, etc.

...And TV being a technology, and being in an age where technology is always improving, I very much think, TV will improve, but which way we never know, no doubt somewhere, out there, someone will have a spur-of-the-moment and think of the next thing, or they can develop what they already have and follow what I have written, in the advanced future hopefully 3D TV dreams, then you could have fun and work all day, and quite literally have nice dreams, and watch TV all night, at the same time.

Nice to here from you guys and gals at Verizon and other technological groups and companies out there.

And I hope the future of Television, is a brighter one!

Thank you.

I would want a tv where there was 3D on every movie channel. I would like to see the actual figuers. I would also enjoy smelling the food. Possibly a world that you are inside the tv. For instance the helmets at theme places that you put on and pretend you are inside, that would be awesome in action movie or just a tv show. A world where you could be active like mowing the lawn and still watch tv at the same time. I want a tv where i can take the recorded disc and put it on the computer to put on my iPod, they may have that i am not sure. A world where you could talk to the person in the tv and they could respond. A remote that you don't loose, ours always gets stuck in the couch. Maybe the remote could be one where you hold your hand up and the tv is like a touch screen. But you are not really touching the tv. All of these ideas would reinvent the future and i hope to have some of them one day!

Will regularly scheduled programming become a thing of the past?

I hope not. People don't want everything "on demand". They like to have it put in front of them. Think of how often you will watch you all time favorite movie when you happen to catch it on TV - and yet you NEVER rent it on DVD.

Also, its great to watch shows like John Stewart or Saturday Night Live. Stewart is great and his show relies on it being as current as possible. Its up to the hour in terms of the news its parodying. Saturday Night Live has not been great in a long time but at least its live, and there's always something exciting about that. So I hope we always have regularly scheduled programming.

But what am I really waiting to see happen with TV entertainment? Simple: many more channels at a much lower cost to the consumer.

I am looking for an ala carte menu selection. I should be able to select only the stations that I want to receive.

I also envision stations having a listing of their shows on a menu screen and you pick the show that you want to watch when you want to watch it.

I also envision newspapers having channels on the TV enabling you to read the papers as they currently appear on the internet. This can include the option of having a small window within the screen to watch a television program.

I see a messenger service added so that people can text their online friends via their TV.

I see pay per view movies going away as all movies in the public domain become selections that can be viewed at any time.

Take care,

I know that when I was drawn into a show, one missed episode can put that to an end! I get lost and confused to what is going on, and I have to stop, and wait for the show to be released to DVD or forget about it. Some shows you won't even bother with if you missed the first half of the episode, or season. A lot of "prime time" tv that is marketed to my age group of twenty-something-year olds is marketed at a time when I'm working in the evening and can't watch anything. These are all factors to why I've nearly abandoned all TV watching these past few years.

Luckily thanks to technology like DVR and TiVo, these factors have been reduced for all of us. This is the direction I see TV going. Much like Comcast's "OnDemand" system, I see television dropping the regular schedule, and instead, uploading their shows to the system that we the viewer can retrieve in our own time. Perhaps episodes will stay up for a week in some cases, or perhaps for as long as the show runs. Some networks have already adapted to this, and much like NBC, have posted their episodes on the web for the season. (Thank God or I would've never finished 'Heroes!') It's possible that television will open up a lot more to computers in the coming age, and even put the two together like we've seen in some cases.

One thing that will interest me to see is the direction of advertisement. With such a system, fast forwarding through commercials will only be natural. Internet episodes force you to watch an ad before each clip of the show. What I think we will see more of in the future is product placement. We're already seeing an increase in product placement on TV and in the movies (i.e.: Transformers)

I'm not sure what the future holds in the world of television. One thing I'd like to see happen is the cable/satellite providers allow the customer to select individual channels rather than the package choices we have today. I am paying for a lot of channels that I never view. This is not fair to me and should stop. I could probably cut my satellite bill in half if I could hand-select which channels I wish to receive. If they wanted me to remain within a given numerical range (say between 150 and 200) this could easily be arranged. At least then I would not be wasting money because every channel I would pay for would be a channel I, or someone in my family, will actually watch.

Have a Great Day!

As plasmas are currently the top maret seller, and were probubly finalised for marketing about a decade ago, I see the next generation of television, which is probably already designed and made,to be a hologramic kind of tv which will operate on a special set of strategically placed set of lights, giving the viewers the opertunity to watch a programme from any angle and enable them to move around the image and be able to see, for example the front of a car from one seat and the back of the same car from another, and maybe even view from above. Obviousloy the programmes will have to be filmed in a special format which will take some time to set up, but I am sure that there must be something like this on the horizon, it may sound far fetched but two years ago who had Sky+.? My reason for stating this as my scenario is that if I can imagine it to be a reality there must be technitions out there whos job it is to come up with these ideas, or call me unrealistic. As for programmes I tend to get sick of people who moan about there being 'too much of this or too much of that' I find there is enough variation for everyone and with Sky+ there is no need for anyone to moan, as 8 hours of the day most of us are at work, 8 hours we are asleep, and out of the remaining 8 hours if all someone has to do in thier lives is watch tv then they must live a fairly dull life. But as with everything I would love to see my vision of hologramic tv a reality.GOOD QUESTION.

I'm waiting for the follow things with TV entertainment:

(1) Decent programming. Its amazing how I have 60 channels and there still isn't anything good on.

(2) Good customer service - how about an APPOINTMENT TIME instead of an APPOINTMENT WINDOW? I can't hang around my house from 2pm on Monday to 9am on Thursday just to wait for my cable man who might not even show up (thank you, Comcast). And what ever happened to talking to someone who speaks English when you have a technical problem?

(3) Less reality TV. Do we really need back-to-back episodes of Brooke Knows Best, or a 2 hour run of Cops every single day?

(4) Customizable cable packages - I think its fair to say that most of us would axe the Home Shopping Network and other such dead weight that gets jammed into our cable packages. Another example: who the hell keeps MSNBC on the air? It's certaintly not the viewers. It definitely isn't the ratings. It can't be the revenue flow. Give me a horse tranquilizer and maybe I could sit through it. Otherwise, get off my cable package!

There are already plenty of channels with nothing worth watching. I am already bombarded by ads and services and offers for all manner of things I don't and won't ever want. The media couldn't produce a truly objective news report if it were to dare to try.

For the signals to be priced rationally. Should it cost nearly $100 a month to watch TV? We were originally told that competition was going to make cable less expensive. That appears to have been a less than candid promise.

One significant future problem I see coming in the near future (and it WILL come) is during times of significant natural disaster, to be able to use a portable television set to pick up news and important information via ANALOG broadcast will be invaluable to the people affected by such calamities. But, since nobody makes money on broadcast television during the good times, analog (or "free") television won't be around when it can do its most good for the most people. Especially when the power goes out.

I can see layering of transmissive video screens in order to provide 3 dimensional television. If you think about it, the technology has to be pretty close already. I played a video slot machine at a casino recently where the video touch screen was in front of mechanical reels, providing a really cool interactive effect. The machine was made by WMS gaming and they called it "transmissive LCD screen" which is where I got the term from. I immediately imagined layering a bunch of them together to create a 3d image. Think about the possibilities with that! You could have special 3d cameras that have 2 or 3 lenses (or whatever, depending on how many screens become the standard) that would record from just slightly different angles.

Seems like it is so close to being possible!

Eventually, everyone will have a personal number thru which all manner of communication, entertainment and marketing will come. Everyone will need to be connected or they will not be able to function in society.

And, Yes Big Brother Will Be Watching! Someday, if we survive long enough, these same things will be applied, along with conditioning, directly to the brain. Once more, we will be the docile, obedient serf.

Regularly schedule programming well cease when the networks want it to cease. They are only waiting until Pay-Per-View is a violable system of consist revenue.

3D TV, interactive TV, hands free visual cellphone will eventually be common. These will come about because they are a natural evolution that can be marketed as other innovations become commonplace and expected.i.e new and improved.

I watch less than one hour of TV a week (or even a month, for that matter), and what keeps me from watching is NOT because I don't like the technology. The reason I don't watch is that the TV experience is less rewarding to me than doing housework, writing stories, reading a book, grocery shopping or helping my kids with homework. I cannot imagine a technological advance in TV that would change this.

When I go through spells of watching a lot of TV, I find myself getting angry that I've just spent three hours on the couch and have nothing at all to show for it. That's even true for shows I enjoyed!

In a world where each one of us complains about busy schedules and being rushed all the time, why is it that the average number of hours spent in front of the TV (and I include online viewing as well) keeps going up?

As for technology, I'd like to have the sound improved. There are so many things people on TV say that are just indistinguishable to me. They might as well not say it in the first place.

I have watched others' HD TV and found no difference at all. It would an enormous waste to buy one in my opinion.

What I would really love to see is better written scripts that reflect true human relationships. I would like to see people treating others with respect, too. When I find a program where the characters are using slam "humor" or are taking advantage of others, I turn it off. Those take advantage of others for merely getting a laugh and are inhumane.

It would be rewarding to see programs with disabled characters not just on the show for the sympathetic response, but as part of the regular story-line, without the disability being the most prominent part of the reason the character is on the show.

Cultural variety shows would be wonderful, too. We could all learn about world culture and develop tolerance while being entertained.

More TV shows like on the History Channel or Discovery Channel that are about technology, history, science, stuff that actually matters and changes peoples lives like genetics and automotive history.

I could really use that..... if it was Star Wars or Scarface now that's entertainment but pathetic crap like Prison Break and America's Next Top Model.... pretty much all network TV is useless and boring.

Thank god for cable.

And as far as sports I watch Formula One and Le Mans because I actually drive a car day to day and racing is the auto industry and driving. I also watch Mixed Martial Arts because that's self defense and useful. I don't throw footballs or basketballs everyday and I doubt anything in my life would depend on throwing a ball so I could care less about most other sports.

This allows legal prostitution in many nations. It is a moral split that started in the 60's that suggests there is no reason for wars as we can settle our grievances through words! You see this proposed in the MASH series on TV, where the character Hawkeye has no seeming idea what Communism is all about..

You tube type 2 way media IMO is the only feasible future of technology. Watching TV bores me, I want a real person that I can communicate with.

Although Real Time communication isn't currently an option, except for talk shows on radio or internet, maybe that will be a bigger factor in TV in the future, and I might start watching it again.

Until then, I'm done with the tube and all of it's 1 way, 1 sided, 1 minded shows.

:-)

Honestly, I think that ultimately, the internet will kill the TV star like the video killed the radio star.

So, you'll still have you're luddite clingers that will give you some portion of your current paycheck.

1) Still waiting to see ENTERTAINMENT !!!!!!!!!!!! What ever happened to paid actors? Reality TV sucks!

2) Television should be available directly from the producer across the internet via a standard protocol (IPTV for example) via third party set-top boxes (that can be purchased at retail stores). There should not be proprietary cable/satellite systems. People should be able subscribe to individual networks directly or pay a third party "entertainment provider" who provides content in discounted packages from all networks based on genre, age demographic, or physical location (among others).

3) I hope regularly scheduled programs do not die... there is still much anticipation surrounding upcoming episodes. If everything was available any time, people would quite honestly quit watching TV shows because they wouldn't have anything to talk about at work.

4) Beyond that I hope for a innovative like provider who produces their own remarkably unique and interesting entertainment content/distribution network that mushrooms in popularity as quickly as the HTTP protocol did for the internet.

Tv is already explicit, and should not be. The media advertises things like sex, and drugs, explicit "show offy" clothing. Have you noticed that Abercrombie and Fitch is selling thongs? That is a kids store. My little sisters friends are wearing thongs, She is 7!!! Really take off all the explicit shows. My sister has a boyfriend and has already made out with him!! do you not see what the media is doing to our inviornment? There is gangs and a lot of drug use and young girls being pregnant, because the media advertises things like Jamie Lynn Spears at 16 having a kid. And Juno please... These things should not be shown. I am 17 years old 18 on october 12th. No i am not the greatest person, and i have done drugs and a lot of other things. I would have never known what any of this was if i did not watch tv. And it was "Cool" to me then. The media is going to be the thing to send this world into the ground! We are already half way there! What makes you think that the world is not going to crash in, because people are going to kill and die off from anorexia and drugs. Really now? Think about what you show on television!!

I want to be able to pay for only channels I actually watch. My cable network has about 75 channels, yet my family watches just 7 of them on a regular basis, with another 5 or 6 that are watched occasionally. That means there are 60+ channels that are just a waste. Of course, if the networks would program something other than "reality" shows, we might watch more channels. Make some really good comedies like MASH or WKRP in Cincinnati and I'd watch more television.

In the future,

Virtual Reality = Reality

The TV will be our Window to the World. Not only in one direction (Watching) but also in the other direction (Communicating). We can see programs frorm all over the world. We can participate in tele-video presence events.

Our regularly scheduled programming will not become a thing of the past. It will just become one of the many things you can do with the television.

Wall size panel will give us a true sense of Presence. Our experience with the TV will be engaging, with multiple windows. The computer and communication technology will be integrated with the TV in a seamless way.

You will talk to your TV and it will become an indispensible companion. After all, your TV represents everything, everyone and every place, outside your home.

I can definitely see an end to regularly scheduled programming. With the schedules that people have, it would be easier and more convenient to download the programs you want to watch when you want to watch them. Not to mention that there are only so many time slots.

I don't see this as being the end of advertising, either. I know I've heard so many arguments about how advertisement dollars will be lost, but I blame that on the short-sightedness of the industry. All a network would need to do is to include advertising in the download, and the advertising would be priced based on the number of downloads (easily tracked).
2008-09-16 10:38:51 UTC
I think we should be able to choose what channels we want, a la carte, so to speak. There are maybe 5 channels I watch regularly, expand that to maybe 15 or so that I watch occasionally, and a lot of channels I'm paying for that I never watch at all.

Of course, the only way for a plan like that to be feasible is if the companies don't charge a huge amount for a plan like that. A great way to do that would be to have a 40 channel package deal (or something like that) similar to what there is now, but instead of those channels arbitrarily being chosen by the provider, let the customer choose what channels they want in that package. Also, in my experience, some channels I wanted were in the next plan up, which means more channels to flip through and maybe 4 whole channels I actually wanted for that extra expense.

As it is, there are just too many crap channels that I don't want to watch, but yet I'm paying for them. Unless companies move to let their customers customize content, I think the internet and DVD box sets will be the future, and cable/satellite/FIOS TV subscriptions will drop, as more and more people realize that they don't need 200 channels they aren't interested in.
2008-09-16 10:21:23 UTC
I'm waiting for tv shows to work in the same way as "on demand" type stuff. People will be able to watch the show any time they want without having to deal with downloads or payments for the individual episodes. It could be a subscription service or something, where people can watch as many episodes of anything they want for a small monthly fee. Or it could be ad-supported like regular tv.

I also envision more interactive type tv. I know this is already done to an extent, but it would be cool to have tv shows where people interact over the internet. Perhaps even a reality show or a game show where people over the internet compete for something and they are represented on the tv as 3d avatars of their choosing or design. Sort of like an online game on tv.

In sporting events, the option to listen to the radio broadcast (in sync with the video) from either the home team or the visitor team instead of the TV announcers.

Have a pointer remote (like Wii) that when you click on a player (or actor in other programs) you can get more info about that person. Stats available like there is on the internet. Basically a customizable window to see whatever data you want relating to the program you are watching.

Eliminate "automatic" scrolling data on the screen. Example - if I'm watching a live sports event, I don't want to see the scores scrolled on the screen because I'm taping another event. OR, on bad weather days, I want to be able to acknowledge the alert, and then not be interrupted again unless things change for my county.

DTV has to be the best thing for an intellectual america, provided there are any free thinkers left.

instead of hooking up to a better TV, mine is going in the garbage, and without all the propaganda from advertisers and 'biased' news reporters (the reason we have TV news is to hook a viewer long enough that the TV station can jack up advertising fees, knowing the advertiser will have an audience waiting and wading through the commercials in order to get another little tidbit of gossip or view. those advertising dollars pay for the helicopter, wardrobe, sets, and salaries. once a person comprehends that in the USA there is no news, but rather, a reporter/producer spinning gossip and bias, the ex-viewer will be free to expend effort in something else vastly more productive than talk TV (compare to talk Radio)).

Book sales might be making a comeback, provided former tv viewers out there still have some sort of mind left...

I think there will have to come a time when the widescreen format is once and for all agreed upon and uniform. I hate to see an HD tv with 30% of that good resolution dedicated to black bars. Pathetic!

Also logos should be uniform, small (think big screen TV's!!!).

There should be plenty of bandwidth in order to have the option of watching what you want when you want.

Resolution should be increased to 1080p.

Volume of TV programmes/movies versus commercials should be equal. No more turning up the volume to hear the movie, and then getting horrendously loud commercials (deliberately I'm sure)

Philips Ambilight is an extremely nice addition to TV. I think the broadcast and recorded media could even contain data to control this rather than only using the picture information to reflect in the ambilight. For example, when something creepy is happening, the ambilight could go darker...or when the doorbell or alarm clock rings in the movie, the ambilight could go on full white. Not to mention, it could be synchronised to go with music channels. The technology should be explored further.

3D? don't see the need for it with high definition.

I'd also like to have a setting on the TV (that's the hardware of course) where you can localise the sound field at night time. I know this is possible with current technology, but no TV makes use of it. So, you could be sitting on the sofa and have the sound directed only at the sofa, and it's inaudible elsewhere.

Filters, so you can remove the usual doom and gloom of what's on the news, and only hear the good bits if you want to.

Internet access should be more integral to every TV. It's already a great screen, so why not use it for internet access...which also means firmware updates for the tv via internet for new features.

Well maybe because now it appears we are out of ideas. Many people are reusing the 80's creation to redo them.(Transformers, TMNT, Ironman,) The regularly scheduled programing will become a thing of the past because people work or go to school and record their shows on a dvr. Also tv might become lessed use because of the Internet. Why wait or buy the dvd that contained the episode that you missed while you can go online.

The ability to pay per channel. Make each channel cost 50 cents a month and give users the ability to change their selection once a month. With this data, you'd have far more competition between networks that would have to provide a better total package instead of just one or two hit shows. Really, why do we still do channel packages? Let the consumer decide what they want. If any single provider gave this option, they'd gain a huge segment of the market instantly. If Verizon offered this, I might even switch from Comcast (you guys have a long way to go in the customer service department before you get even close to Comcast).

With VCAST TV I think it would be great if you got projection television off your cell phone.

Regularly scheduled programming won't go away anytime in the near future because people still want the suspense of waiting til 7pm Friday night and they want to catch it right then. TV on at 6:58, room cleared by 6:59, dying for a commercial by 7:05 and waiting for those blasted commercials to be over at 7:14. We still need that in our lives. Tho it's becoming less important.

Besides, speaking of those blasted commercials, where would advertisers go if they're not interrupting regularly scheduled programming? That's where our attention is fixated and their messages are absorbed.

with advances in electronics; television pacifically,i am looking foreword to the time when a television is so much more! such as a communicator, information center, dvr, and computer. Because with most televisions you still require a cable dvr or connection to this and that. I like the idea of a touch screen much like the ipod touch screens look up and Scroll features. I appricate the feature that lets me delete channels i don't want! ahhh control!

I like the old shows, some of the reality shows, but real life family shows we have now are sad!. We have more little kids growing up on camera, haven't we learned from most child actors how it impacted the majority of them negatively?

I appricate scheduled programing, without it there would be way more channel surfing!

as a licened ham radio operator i understand why their are requirement such as the change to high definition broadcasting. to those who require an understanding; study up on it! stop complaning! THE FCC IS A HELP IN YOUR LIFE MORE THAN YOU KNOW!

Now that the internet lets everyone have the ability to communicate LIVE and instantaneously - I am eagerly waiting a television show to use this to its full potential. Excluding a few flaccid news polls or emailed comments - I don't really see the internet being integrated into Live TV. I would love to see a television drama or comedy use the interactive element of computers. Why not have a Choose Your Own Adventure show where the audience determines the outcome between commercial breaks.

I would like to see less reality TV. Most reality TV is garbage and appeals to the lowest common denominator. I would also like to see less teenage programming. I have no interest in watching the trials and tribulations of a pack of spoiled, rich sixteen year olds. I'm sure most adults would agree with this. There just isn't that much in the way of good, quality programming on the major networks, which is why most of my TV viewing is confined to the satellite TV stations. Also, I'm sick and tired of all the stupid programming that is obviously made for uneducated people who lack intelligence, and all the immoral programming. How much more promiscuous sex, violence, and foul language will appear on TV programs before enough is enough?

As for what I expect to happen, I think internet TV viewing and DVRs will continue to become more popular, until a majority of people are watching programming in these ways. I think HDTV will become the norm once the price of HDTVs begin to decrease more. I also believe that satellite/cable channels, Youtube, and rental services such as Netflix will continue to be strong competition for the major broadcast networks. This could potentially lead to a further erosion of viewership.

I would love to see INTELLIGENT programming established on television instead of the tripe called reality tv and the cases of supposedly funny sitcmos that just aren't comedic. Sadly, I feel that will not come to pass.

Technologically, On Demand television will make a jump to cover just about every channel out there. Also, with the shift to digital television in february 2009, look for an even stronger push in high definition channel selection than ever before. Finally, to bring audiences into the mix, watch for interactive television to make a move ... especially during game shows and (ugggggh!) reality programming.

I would like to see tv help the world more, in terms of making it a better place. As of late tv has done nothing but show the ugly side of most people in terms of morals or lack of, greed, prejudices and selfishness. With all this technology the world has not gotten better with acceptance of people that are different. I would say that technology has widen the gap between countries, religion, cultures, poor and disenfranchised. What happened to uniting the world through technology and that technology will bring about globalization? What is the purpose of cable, satellite and HDtv if it doesn't make the world a better place?

At some point in the very near future we will be able to access all programming on demand. There are several set top boxes in production or beta test that allow viewers to order almost any movie and download it for viewing. It only stands to reason that just as there are a few major cable/satellite companies, there will be a few select services that will contract with motion picture production companies as well as television networks to host on demand programming. We will always have broadcast TV because of news, sporting events and other special programming, but it will become increasingly less significant.

This is more of a "hardware" than a "software" answer, but I'd like to be fairly certain that the HD television I buy won't become outmoded in six months.

I'd guessed that 1080p would become a reasonable plateau as a format, but a few months later I read that OLED offered a better picture than conventional HD televisions did. I haven't bought my first HD television yet in part because I feared that 1080p would lose ground to something like "1080p Pro/Plus/Enhanced/Ultra/Deluxe/etc." and that all the bells and whistles would give way to bells of a greater bit depth and whistles of a higher sampling frequency.

A reasonably certain de facto standard would be nice. I'd rather buy a new television once every ten years than ten months.

TV shows are no longer programs they are simply small (and becoming smaller) segments of brief entertainment with more and more commericals. Thank goodness for the "Mute" button at least you don't have to listen to them.

Money is the key to TV and the more times money can be made the less you will see of anything worthwhile. Worst of all TV viewing is become an addiction for many and advertisers love it because they are able to condition people to their products. Have you noticed how you can rarely "channel surf" since all the commericals are now synchrozined to be transmitted at the same time . Luckly with over 10 commericals being transmitted you have at least 2 minutes to do something useful like "mute" the commerical and acutally talk with your spouse or family member or leave the room and take a break ,etc. Also with Tvio and other recording devices you can fast forward through the commericals and not waste you time being saturated with the same commericals.

At the pace things are going you may one day hear "We interrupt this commerical to bring you a program".

It will be nice when we can just watch what we want when we want, with all television program. I think all TV should work like the Hulu web site. There is a date when a new episode of a show becomes available, and then you can watch it whenever you want. All the reruns are also available for viewing at your leisure. And you only have to sit through one commercial per break.

I also think that eventually, shows will not have to conform to a particular length. Instead of every show being 22 minutes or 45 minutes, one show could be 33 minutes and another could be 16 minutes.

Outside of PBS programming, I'm still waiting for _DECENT_ shows on the over-the-air broadcast networks. Also, I'm still waiting for cable/satellite service to drop in price to make those mediocre programs worth buying into.

I doubt regularly scheduled programs will become a thing of the past, for the same reason why buses and trains have (some sort of) published schedules. "Pay for view" on TV is fine for "one time" programs like a prize fight and "I'm too tire to go out and rent a video" evenings. However, I think TV pay-per-view has too much competition from the WWW, video stores, traditional movie theaters, etc. for that to supplant mostly regularly scheduled programming.

My crystal ball isn't good enough to see how the upcoming switch from analog to digital broadcast TV will play out. If the broadcast networks play well the few cards they have left, they could very well pull the rug out from under the cable/satellite TV providers. But the broadcasters will have to offer better programs, and more special interest ones, to do so.

I really doubt that TV web-casting will be viable in the near term (in the next five years). The "broadband" WWW service available to most people really isn't good enough yet to provide video feeds that can stand up to what a 12" analog TV can deliver, let alone deliver anything better. Decent TV web-casting may be contender in five years, but I won't make a bet either way right now.

TV on portable tiny screen devices like cell phones, blackberries, PDAs, etc., is a nice idea for people with teenage and 20-something eyesight. However, that service is wasted those of us that need reading glasses. ;-/ Can you say "It'll give me an eyestrain headache in 10 minutes watching that small screen!"? Also, see my comment above about broadband bandwidth, it isn't there yet either for a decent picture in these wireless devices. If wireless providers can provide the bandwidth for decent video, and the hardware folks realize that they could tap a huge 30+ year old crowd with bigger screens, that market could be "the next killer app."
2008-09-16 11:11:25 UTC
Honestly, I see traditional television networks becoming obsolete going the way of the Pony Express in the next view years.

Eventually, you are going to see so much bandwidth, you are going to turn to URLs to watch a television show directly from a server rented by the TV show's production company with no traditional TV network needed.

All the pieces are there, just someone with the moxy to by pass Media Row in Manhattan will have it happen. If a Recession does happen, this will be the opportunity for it. Also. it will all be view on demand viewing with a "just posted' notice coming to you as you desire.

Production companies like the SciFi Channel and Food Network are on the vanguard of doing this.
2008-09-16 08:43:07 UTC
Just one time I would like to see a chapter of Stargate SG 1 without 100 commercials. You get ten minutes of show followed by

five minutes of commercials. The only way I have found not to see a million commercials is buy the whole series on dvd and that gets expensive in a hurry. I hate commercials. It is bad enough I have to pay the dish network a fortune for 200 channels, 100 of which are nutty auctions, Paid commercials, workout programs, diet programs. If I had wanted all that junk I would have subscribed for them I don't give a hoot about Jewelry auctions and all that other junk give me some good mystery, sci-fi, horror and such.
2008-09-16 21:23:02 UTC
What I hope happens in my lifetime is that TV and the Internet merge to the point that you can download any movie, TV program, sporting event etc. that you want to watch. You would not have to have a long term contract with any one provider, you could just do a kind of pay per view system where you only paid for what you downloaded.

I'd also like to see more interactivity in TV shows. For example, if TV was integrated into the Internet, viewers could voice chat with a TV show host live on the air kind of like you can call a radio talk show and talk to the host. Only in this case, you could see the host and if you had a webcam, the host could see you.

Technology in the future will be more advanced than what we have today. With the release of HDTV's starting to settle in more households, I believe that 1080p will be our standard. We will evolve to greater resolutions, of maybe upto 2520p, or so on. I don't think that we will evolve to a smell-o-vision, but I believe television programming will be very stylish and organized. What I hope to see in the future for programming is tha ability to watch multiple programs around the world with realtime and no zone restrictions. Maybe in the future, some program will come out which will allow us to write on a piece of paper, and it will show on the screen, making it able to play games, communicate, and education better. Or even maybe there will be some kind of interaction with other viewers, kinda like a Youtube.

My vision for truely interactive tv requires a new technology which I'll call Gas Particle Projection TV. I envision us in a ten ft by ten ft by ten ft cubed room filled with special gas particles enabling me to enter a virtual world (a tv show or an AI programmed experience) where I could personally interact with the virtual world around me. This world will be intereractive for all five senses. I want to virtually enter the amazon rain forest and hear, smell and feel the hot rain and the creatures that naturally inhabit that region.

I am looking for more control over what I watch and how much time I spend watching TV. I want to see less advertisements or be able to choose which advertisements to view. I currently use a DVR to record regularly scheduled TV shows and zip past the commercials. There are a few commercials I like to see but most annoy me especially the large number of automobile advertisements.

I think that the coming of all digital programming has nothing to do with improving things. Instead, I think it has to do with cable companies calling the shots. What happens to the elderly people who can barely afford things already? TV is the only thing that some of them have as entertainment. They surely will not be able to afford cable or "the dish". Analog TV has been good enough all of these years, so why change it? This is just another way to force people to pay for something that has been free since TV was invented. What's next, all satellite radio that we have to pay for too?? It is all about corporate greed. SAD!

how about we return to a simpler time. Maybe cable at a reasonable price. Smellovision are you nuts??? But it could hppen. How about a tv you crry with you and hang on a wall or lay on any tabel you want. I think we will always have scheduled programing but yea gives the alternative to wtch the regularly scheduled show instead of the special event. And please enough with the commercials already. I remember when the reason you bought cabel was because there were no commercials now if you watch usa or tnt it is brutal I had ten minutes of commercials between scenes.

I'd just like the price to come down a bit. We have "expanded" cable, no digital box, dvr, premium channels etc. and it's still $50 a month. I'm amazed at the prices people are willing to pay for tv, especially some of those extras that I don't want or need, and am definitely not willing to pay for.

The only thing that would be of interest to me is to literally be able to watch any show whenever I wanted, and the current option ("FreeZone" from Cox) doesn't even come close.

And call me crazy, but I don't mind commercials at all. I know tons of people who dvr everything to avoid them, but when the heck am I supposed to go to the bathroom or grab a drink of water?

I think that a lot of TV studios are clueless. A lot of products they have should be available for free online. A major example are TV shows. They fight to have these shows distributed online. But what's the alternative? I'm suppose to buy them on DVD for every season? There's no way I'm doing that when every season is at least $50. The argument there could be that they sell it for much cheaper.

However then you have things like Saturday Night live. I'm a big fan and I would certainly like to watch all the classic episodes and even some of the bad ones. But there is now way I'm going to buy 30+ seasons of SNL on DVD. It's too impractical. They should release every single episode every made online in full resolution. What are the shows doing now anyway? Just sitting in some basement collecting dust. There's a huge opportunity for them to make money and they just don't see it.

I would like, first of all, to have all my electronics be on one system. My tv is my computer and gaming systems etc. DVDs and games a thing of the past, you can download movies and games right to your home system. While you can watch things like football games live, programmed shows you can download to watch when you want. Rather than a full interruption from commercials, have a sidebar ad, or a corner one, something that displays the product without interrupting what you are watching. I also want a hologram projection system where you can almost feel like you really are right there, almost able to reach out and touch characters. Maybe more interactive shows would be fun too, not exactly 'choose your own adventure', but a choice. Also, a channel dedicated to amateur movie makers, where up and comings can upload their stuff for the public to download and watch. (like youtube, but more structured, and actual movies or skits, not everything else) I think it'd be great to be able to buy something off ebay or check my e-mail in one small window while watching a movie on the main screen, or play World of Warcraft on the main screen while i watched the news in a small window. :)

These are the scenarios that I'd like to happen soon, but won't happen any time soon in the United States

1) I will be able to choose the channels and pay for those only

2) I will not be force fed channels I don't watch particularly non-English channels

3) There will be less of 'reality' shows and more of meaningful shows, reality or not

4) There will be no advertisements shoved down the throats of paying customers - all channels to be like HBO for subscribers

5) There will be somehow true competition in providing the entertainment - ie more than 1 Cable/Phone company per jurisdiction; in other words I want to see Cable company X Vs Cable company Y and Phone Company X Vs Phone Company Y instead of Phone Company Vs Cable Company.

6) All the direct and indirect taxes, hidden fees, surcharges etc are eliminated and the customer pays only for the tangible services

Despite the availability of technology, these things won't happen, but it feels good to day dream

As people become busier and are offered other forms of entertainment, they will turn to the internet to watch their shows at a time that's convenient for them, and scheduled programming will be reduced to what radio is today: background noise while you're doing something else. Audio-visual entertainment is going to be taken over by the personal computer. People will subscribe to TV shows from networks' websites, which will download to their computers automatically when that show is scheduled to be "released." There will be computer software to organize TV show subscriptions like iTunes manages pod casts. People's TV sets will be connected to their computers, probably through wiring inside the halls of their house, like cable is right now. Everyone will have one master remote like those $300 ones you see at Best Buy with their own LCD screens, and with a push of a button on that remote, their computer will start broadcasting the saved show (or YouTube video, or pictures from the digital camera, etc) to the TV set. This requires no reinventing of the TV; only a connection from computer to TV, a bit of extra software on the PC, and a way to subscribe to shows online.

(Great Idea) Date: 09-16-08 Time:10:30 AM

To be able to set and watch a tv. that was preloaded with your favorite movies you purchased with the tv set such as the 200 Best or Top thrillers, westerns,Sufi, hunting, fishing etc. Along with the choice of regular scheduled programming.

These movies would be loaded some how to your tv to keep with the purchase. Imagine your favorite movies to watch whenever you want even over and over again.

Doesn`t everyone agree?

It would certainly be different than watching Dish or Direct tv. or cable . I`m watching the same movies i have seen over and over again for the last 15 years. and they are movies they let me see. not the ones i want to see when i want to see them.

the Satellite stations just change the same darn movies from Showtime to HBO,etc just back and forth. Whats that?

1. watch what you like and WHEN you like.

2. record and replay, send, share.

3 browse pictures galleries, you tube , web on TV.

4 play radio, online podcast on TV.

5 real time user comments on shows.

6 create custom personal broadcasts from selectable content

and share with friends or even put some advertisements there.

7 create your own schedule of favorite programs.

8 Adjust the advertisements you watch in balance with what you pay the service provider.

9 Customize the news channels for content you are actually interested in.

10 Games , of course.

Or simple replace the old noisy box with a better multimedia device:

a computer.

The future I see...

I think that more channels will move to video on demand styles. News headlines, commercials, and promos will run in various windows while viewers can scroll with a remote through them various shows that they wish to watch. Shows will become available at a certain time during the week and people will be able to watch whenever they have time as opposed to taping, using tivo, or dvr's.

I believe this format will carry over to the internet for a price. Networks will offer these shows online to viewers who choose to subscribe to the service.

I really believe that the future of television lies in the internet due to the very fact that so many people download televisions shows every week. Networks will eventually figure out how to use this medium to their benefit.

I think TiVo and the internet have changed a great deal about TV, more people are interested in doing long form drama such as Heroes or Lost, because thanks to these innovations, it is no longer the case that missing an episode ruins the series, as TiVo would allow you to catch up, while still offering advertising revenue to the company. As well as TiVo, the internet's also been helping with this. Though I live in the UK, I'm an addict to the daily show. Their online service allows me to watch their show, with advertising, thus contributing to it's continuance.

Which brings me onto a final point, downloading and copyright violation. It should now be apparent to anyone in the industry that the internet is revolutionising the way media is experienced. An ideal example is Lost. I'll openly admit, I'm as guilty of downloading as the next person, and i've used downloads to get caught up on the show if I miss it. These downloads are completely free and (more importantly) completely free of advertising. It doesn't contribute to the continuation of the show in any way. But it doesn't have to be that way.

More companies should take a look at what the daily show is doing, and take hints from that.

I think a few major changes will be noted in the way we receive and view television programs in the near future.

Unlike the blocked programming methods of today's cable and satellite providers, I believe that viewers will soon be able to choose when to watch a show, loading it whenever they have the time. I can see a progression from "TiVo" and "On Demand" to something that is more like an internet browser, where you can view the programs available, and purchase them a la carte, rather than paying a flat fee for access to a specific network each month.

I also anticipate progressive integration between console gaming, computer/internet networking, television broadcasting, and the viewing of movies. I think Xbox Live has hit upon a potentially astronomical concept with the downloading of movies, music, game content, and promotional materials from a server straight to the console, and I can imagine this kind of idea making its way into televised entertainment on a broader scale.

I suppose the main thrust of my technological anticipation does fall into the category of integration. We have incredible technologies in quite a few fields; now let's bring them together (in an affordable way). Eliminate the need to drive to the video store, or to even send a DVD in the mail by providing online access to movie rental/purchasing. Allow the consumer to choose what they watch, and allow them to choose when to watch it, rather than relying on the TiVo to record things they know they'll miss. Bring technology together to serve the people who are paying for it.

I'm waiting to see greater integration with the internet. Everyone knows that people are spending more and more time on-line and that more people are looking for the flexibility to watch what they want when and where they want. Yet the TV networks are still very slow to offer their content on-line. And when they do offer on-line content, it is often in web sites that are loaded with ads or that require special plug-ins that bog down your computer.

I realize everyone is concerned about protecting their copyrights and preserving the ad dollars. But sure they can find ways to do both that will allow greater flexibility to the consumer. In fact, I would say that networks wouldn't have to worry about protecting their copyrights if they made the content more readily available. Who's going to risk downloading the latest episode of a TV show from a BitTorrent when you can watch it on the network's web site for free.

Just to use an example, NBC.com has video available of many of it's shows. An hour show is usually broken into 5-6 pieces with a 30 second ad in between. This is perfectly acceptable for being able to watch the shows anytime for free. On the other hand, to watch their Olympic coverage you had to install this Silverlight plug-in that was clunky and often slowed my computer to a complete halt.

Basically, my point is that TV has to integrate its self better with the web or it will become increasingly less relevant.

One more point: Rather than suing Google, YouTube, and everyone and their brother over copyrighted material being posted, The networks should work with YouTube to find a solution that keeps the video available for people to see, but also makes the proper ties to ensure ad revenue. The whole point of a TV show is to get people to watch it. Why alienate viewers just because they aren't watching it on your site.

The TV is no longer entertaining system and I predict that the Internet TV will take over the cable companies.the Internet already took over the phone companies & through the Internet we're able to watch any country TV with thousands of channels.I do believe that our TV & movie industry are ready to be taken over by any country who's willing to invest real money on real talented people to replace the trashy reality TV shows all over the stations & go back to the real good old days that put America in the living room of every home on earth.

Right now... this is what I SHOULD be getting from TV.

Set Top (sling top box) capacity to watch my tv with my laptop from anywhere.

DVR- HUGE capacity- 1TB or more... OR just let us attach our our portable hard drives. Seriously, we shouldn't be limited by the really horrible hard drive capacity that you can't update.

FIBER TO MY HOUSE- seriously, we have fiber to the node, how much more would it cost to go an extra 100 feet.

UNLIMITED high speed internet. I would never use a service that limited my surfing. The future is going to take speed of over 10mbps on BOTH upload and download.

While you are at it... just include the cable modem, wireless router etc all in your set top box.

Allow us to use the set top box on multiple TVs.

Pretty much, this is what you SHOULD be giving us now... what you should be doing in the future is really still a question. We don't know enough about how technology is going to change, but you should catch up to at least these standards first.

I would like to see more HD channels as well as faster on demand service and better internet speed. I am a firm believer in each home having a 50mbit connection so they can surf the web, play games, and watch as much HD tv as they like. With fiber to the door i think we can accomplish this as well as get the home consumer to a point where streaming HD tv at 13mbit/s is no longer an issue for the household internet or the cable/phone network as a whole. Why we still use coax is beyond me when fiber to the door is a much better solution. It seems that to many people are relying on old coax networks instead of moving to fiber optics.o In closing i would love to be able to have 4 or 5 tvs in the same household all watching HD tv on demand with no degradation to the internet connection or the HD programs.

Thanks for listening.

Ok, no more "Trading Spaces" ick! I don't see how watching a bunch of clueless construction wannabes can be entertaining. I like educational television and informative programming such as PBS, Discovery Health, TLC (health), Animal Planet and all the news stations. I also think that cartoons are still awesome!

I believe that eventually, all TV will be entirely on the internet. There may be a fee for certain channels, but I think in due time, the television will become obsolete and we will do all our program-watching on the internet.

Perhaps you'll be able to select the show you want and not have to be limited by certain times. Lord knows what will happen, technology has advanced things so much already.

More interactive tv. With HD radio stations are getting multiple channels to have use of. 1 channel is obviously running the format that made the channel successfulwhile the others are trying different formats that appeal to different audiences. I hope tv can make a move in that direction, except on the alternate channels provide alternate results for tv shows. So if you were watching "house" on the primary channel then it could give you options of results as well as channels in which to tune into to see how those options carry out!

Less advertising. The number of interruptions for commercial ads ruins a TV show for me and I just turn the TV off.

My favorite shows like Gray's Anatomy can be seen over the Internet.

Many times I watch the show that way rather than suffer with all

the advertising.

I don't know how technology can change this situation, though.

Looking for Ideas???

This is what I want. I don't need 500 channels, or even 50. I want to be able to design my own TV package. I've looked at the packages offered by the satellite providers and my local cable company. Over half the channels that they offer, I don't want to watch. I'm on cable now and I'm paying for the upgraded extended basic because my family wants to watch 10 more channels than that are offered on the basic $20 a month plan. So I pay $50 a month for 30 channels I like and 50 channels I don't like.

Give me a converter box that lets me pay only for the channels I want.

The Future I see coming to TV and the Internet.

I see a marriage between TV providers and Internet providers that is far beyond what is offered today. Cable offers up to 50mbps? I'm seeing Giga bits per second. With the invention of Quad core processors, we need a faster way to hook into the internet. With movies over the internet and being able to hook our 1080p 52" TVs into our computers, we need more speed. Remember, 13 years ago we were introduced to the 1giga bite hard drives, 36kbps modems and 32mb of RAM. Today we have Tera bites on our hard drives, 50mbps cable modems, and 8gbs of RAM. 10 years from now we will have 1000tbs of hard drive space, 10 tbs of RAM, and gbps Internet connections.

Will Verizon be ready?

I love being able to lay back and kick my feet up to watch TV. The talk of the town is internet...YOUTube and junk like that.

After sitting in front of a computer all day long at work, many of us viewers want to lay back and relax to watch TV.

The continual increases being felt by cable viewers is not a good thing being done by the companies imposing these increases to the consumer at a time where we are all cutting back as salaries go down and companies close their doors indicating that the economy is suffering severely. If you want to make money during this recession, put people first and let them have what they want at a cost they can afford.

Don't outsource your CS dept to an overseas resource that can't give top service to your clients.

Stay personal and stay STATE-side. Service is everything, as is meeting the needs of the people who pay your bills and keep you in business.

I want to be able to send recorded TV Shows from my DVR to another persons DVR.

There are so many times that i will record and watch a good show or documentary and think to myself " wow my sister would really enjoy this" of course i can explain it to her but it would be much better if i was able to send it to her from my DVR to hers. this works great for families who live in different states and such and can't necessarily come over to watch a Television show at each others house.

Anyways that to me, would be the best change. It would be just like email in a way and i think it is definitely something that could be done a lot easier than some other suggestions.

I hope TV will still be in streams, but also available in randomisation of categorically select forms alike a TV stream, but you select what kind of stuff you want for that channel, make your own TV channel out of programmes that are currently live and/or pre-recorded from a vast library of all-you-can-want programmes, and even a non-stream television format, that's just a library.

Satellite technology will enable us to customize our viewing to a maximal degree. For instance, if I want to watch an obscure/little known British television show and Disney in the same night, I will be able to program in my choices and voila!

Perhaps I want some Japanese television, Spanish, little known, etc. As long as it is available somewhere, it's available to me.

I would like to see this. Also, I'd like to be able to customize my viewing without leaving the house in the following ways: vintage TV shows, movies and so forth that are available to my choice. Such shows may almost never be shown--especially if they are very old or obscure.

I watch television as an ESCAPE from "reality" for a brief time. The last thing I want to see is "real life" on TV. I'm with those who want to see the reality trend stop. I do my part by refusing to watch anything that is reality.

At this point, I only watch Family Guy, The Simpsons, and the occasional PBS or news show and that's it.

I would love to have television able to do 3-d viewing, I think that would be the next step in technology. I hate realty shows and I hope they phase out but technically speaking this would spark up television watchers. I think regularly schedule programs will always be in place and will always change to the viewing audience unless they have all on demand shows which would be great so we wouldn't have to watch programs we dont like.

I would like to see the cost of television entertainment decrease in cost. I would also like to have the option of what channels I pay for. I do not believe that I, as a consumer, should have to pay for stations that I never watch. There are all types of channels that are included that many do not watch, Home Shopping networks, religion channels and others. If the owners of these shows are in such a need of funding, they should find other ways to support themselves. If there are not enough people interested in the programs, maybe they should all be eliminated from cable line-ups. I am sure there are many other households that would like a pay as you watch or pay for what you watch option when it comes to television.

For the commercial, especially the "infomercial" to go the way of the dodo. It seems every time I turn on the TV or change a channel there's another commercial, it's gotten so bad that I've started just turning the thing off and putting on some music and doing some reading, or if Ieave the TV on I mute the sound as long as the commercials are on, if I have to watch them I don't have to listen to them.

I have faith that all of these "reality" based programs will go away and we will once again see talented actors and actresses performing material written by equally talented writers. I am more than fed up with watching amateurs performing things I can see on the pier at Santa Monica-for free. Now I change the channel, but I'm paying money to have television supplied to my humble abode. Am seriously thinking of having the remote surgically implanted in my right hand..

Less reality, I don't care about watching so many shows about idiots stuck in houses doing stuff. A few are all right... but c'mon.

And Mtv either gets put off the air, or starts playing actual music. And not that crap they do now either, stuff with substance in it.

But having 10,000 channels might be nice to wish for. There should also be some kind of search function sorta like googling your TV, if the channels ever get that high.

I think after the digital television switch, companies should switch to an all channel package, as well as reduce the price. It's way too much for just the basic channels, and really, with the extra channels package, even though there are so many more channels available, there is still about the same amount of interesting things for one person to find to watch.

I think the programs on TV are crazy now. I will look forward to being able to keep the good shows on and get rid of the many that are just dumb. I hope that one can watch a show, at the time they wish in the furture. Sometimes I miss the show by minutes or come home half way into it. I always prefer to see it from the beginnig.

Considering I have cable TV still, I'd like for there to be some standard. It's ridiculous that people who live only a few miles from me need to have a different provider and separate channels.

I'd also like to see some equilibrium in content. Sure, news and sports are fine, but what about other hobbies? What about game enthusiasts (don't even say G4)? How about techies? We have a few decent channels, some of which aren't even carried on basic satellite.
2008-09-17 07:46:10 UTC
Some much better programming and get rid of the commercials if you are already paying for cable. Get rid of the reality shows. Put actual Arts and Entertainment on A&E, not crime shows. Actual science on Discovery and Science channels. Music on the music channels. And so on. You get the idea. Put on some actual news and not fluff and yellow journalism and the reporter's opinions. We don't need to be told and have a rehash of a speech we just finished listening to.

Don't charge extra for a DVR. It should be included with cable. Better organization of channels and schedules.

1: No regularly scheduled programs. Everything on-demand.

2: No commercials. With how much companies like Time-Warner and Verizon are charging for service, there is no excuse to continue interrupting our programming with meaningless money-grubbing noise. The future of entertainment is commercial-free entertainment.

3: Volumetric displays. We already have the technology to film from multiple angles. We already have the technology to project volumetric displays on both large and small scales. I see a strong future in three-dimensional - perhaps even interactive - programming, especially in the realm of video games.

I can see me electing a T.V show to watch from the list of programs set for the day at any time that I wish on that day. The reason being, it is very inconvinient to come into a show after it has started and so that I, in that case, will usually choose to wait until the re-run to watch that particular episode. Additionally some shows are just not on when I am free so I would like the option of watching it earlier or later. Recording the show is tedious work and I dont neccesarily have a great desire to watch the shows I usually choose to watch... I just want more options from my favorite t.v. station at the time that I want to watch t.v. :)

initially the "tv" will become a much smarter device. you may tell your tv that you like an actor and while you're watching something it might scroll on the bottom saying "so and so is on channel 3 in the movie whatever at 8pm"

once the tv knows enough of your tastes it can start doing predictive analysis and suggest shows you may enjoy, and it will start targetting advertising to you in this same fashion.

but what i'd like to see is still a direct, cortical implant that lets me watch movies in my head as if i'm really there and it's really happening...ala the matrix :)

will scheduled programming become a thing of the past...YES, already we see the major networks putting their shows on the internet. the only thing scheduled may be live events like sports and the news.

There will be a return to the 1950's approach of companies producing shows to showcase their products inside the production as much as possible. That is already happening again but I'm talking on a GRAND SCALE. Commercials are already white noise. I'm talking about the next level of subliminal interaction and mind control through innovative product placement and usage. In fact, I am talking to potential sponsor companies right now about this very idea for a new series production. We never considered Verizon a potential sponsor though. Hmmm.

Eventually, I think that television will become as interactive as if you were walking down the street; we will no longer have reality TV, but VIRTUAL reality TV. Because of this, regularly scheduled programming (with the exception of newscasts and sporting events, although with the latter it will be more like you were at the game, but with your seats in the press box - just like the announcers) will become as passè as rotary telephones, but I do not think that it will fade out completely - at least not at first (like rotary telephones did not; in fact, there are STILL some of them around - and in use). But I can certainly see a future in which there will be no need to channel flip when you are bored, because your television set will be able to become any program you want it to.

We will be able to watch what we want, whenever we want. Also, we can watch programmes from all over the world.. TV will have something like the internet; we can pick and search whatever is on around the world and what someone else is watching.

Because let's be realistic, we will never be able to go inside the TV and turn up at the studio where the show is being recorded at and the 'smellivision' thing just doesn't seem like my type of thing. I want everything i need on the TV. No i don't really want channels. I believe we should be able to browse whatever we want to watch whenever and from all over the world.

I'm waiting for people to pull the plug and stop watching it entirely. I watch blu-rays and use video games and pc but I don't ever, ever watch TV. Every time I see it all the channels are showing stuff for people with the IQ of an average dog. "America's got talent," "Oprah," "Steve," then you've got your blocks of enough sitcoms to make you puke, then you have the network news that tries to tell you all about the world in 30 minutes (minus 8 minutes for commercials)

Even PBS is peppered with advertisements from the oil and natural gas industry, and half of its prime-time offering is garbage like "seasoned traveler."

I work in market research and you folks at Verizon would do well to listen to me, the baby-boomers that watch that "seasoned traveler" and "this old house" and all the sitcoms, and Jay Leno, they are the last generation that will watch any significant television. My generation X is breaking that mold, though technology isn't quite advanced enough to make it plain, within a few years none of us will watch a screen that isn't interactive in some way. That is, video game, or video chat, or online video, or at least a dvd or blu-ray player. If we're not in control of exactly what we see, we won't watch it. When you're not in control of what's on, you get served garbage like modern television, and most of us under 40 are disgusted by it.

I know Verizon is gonna try to start offering TV, all the companies are trying to offer TV, internet and telephone all at once, but it's a waste, don't do it. You'll be watched by old retired people who want to see cooking shows. Leave TV to join radio in irrelevant, marginalized mediocrity.

Instead of renting movies or netflix or whatever, you should be able to pay a fee to watch ANY movie available at a rental store ON Demand style. also shows that you may have missed the night before for people without tivo, no more competition with cable or dish, just one that will get you all local channels and all channels you want instead of some "package deal" and "promotion price" just flat rates, also, no more east coast bias, the olympics live only on the east coast?? ridiculous!! all channels in HD and available in HD and no sports packages, just pay a fee to watch an out of market game, pay-per-view style. I am personally sick over the fact that our government has made HDTV law. They have more important things to do than to generate business for Japanese and Chines TV manufacturers.

I'm astonished by the fact that regularly scheduled programming still exists, that you have to either record a show if you're absent, or be home in time to catch it (for those who lack TiVos). I'm surprised that there isn't simply a database of available programming, per channel; the technology definitely exists, as well as the storage capacity, and I certainly hope that this particular 20th century hangover clears up, and soon. But this is very short-range, of course. Within thirty years, we'll be experiencing shows in our minds, as we like, when and where we like, in something much greater than high-definition and 3D sound.

Trends indicate increasing ability to identify and market to specialized demographics.

Television has lost its distinct identity as a content provider with the increasing accessibility to internet content such as YouTube, cable movies and other content providers.

With the ability to skip comercials that ReplayTV and increase in channels, profitabiilty of shows depends on buzz and high viewership, no new productions are likely to be more formulaic, like the popular Law & Order spinoff series.

The teen market will drive technologies such as MySpace like content, YouTube videos, and buzz word-of-mouth flocking which will propel unknown talents into the stratosphere.

At the same time Depression era type fantasy contests, such as American Idol and Survivor, will continue to proliferate as production values vary from low to over the top.
2008-09-16 17:17:57 UTC
i bet that some point in the future (near or far) there will be a merge between the internet on computers and TV. You can already watch half the shows you want to if you know where to look, youtube is a great example. this bound to happen with the pace and direction that technology is headed in, its only a matter of when.

Be nice to see some actual entertainment with the advertisements and broadcaster's Identification back between the show segments instead of during. I have no problem changing channels when pop-ups appear, even during my favorite shows, what few decent shows there are.

Becoming more inclined to spend my time reading.

I see a heavier bombardment in really dumb advertisement as quality people leave advertisement fields for more lucrative jobs. Pity.

I think it would be so cool to have a television company that had you fill out a questionaire for each person in the family about their likes, dislikes, etc...and each family member have their own remote and when they use it to turn on any tv in that house....the entire programmming is set to entertain them....for instance my five year old- ALL cartoons and cartoon movies and learning shows ONLY...every time he flips the tv on! That would be awesome. Also it would be cool to have a tv company that provided you with actual TV's along with their satelitte service...that way it would seem worth it to pay $100's a month! Something goes wrong with the tv-they come and replace it!

For TLC ("the learning channel") to stop being the "what not to wear channel" and to live up to it's initial promises.

For the Discovery Channel to stop being the "Mike Rowe" channel and offer more variety consistent with it's initial promises.

For Cable/Satellite companies to stop showing the same programs on different channels just so they can say they offer x number of channels.

For Cable/Satellite companies to stop showing so many commercials. I already pay money to watch the TV. Why should I pay so much in my time to watch so many commercials? The commercial breaks are so frequent and long that my cost of watching a show is too high.
2008-09-16 06:51:57 UTC
A la carte pricing. It's not the 1950s anymore. More TV channels≠better. TV rots your brain. Why should I have to pay $120/month to get the 12 channels I actually watch? And forget about supporting niche channels. If I don't get the niche I'm interested in, why should I pay so much for other channels that hardly anybody watches. Bundling TV channels needs to be made illegal.
j
2008-09-16 05:59:45 UTC
You should be able to select what show you want from a list for each channel, so that you can watch it whenever you want that day.

I'm also waiting for the complete merging of TV and the computer. Television should be an online feature accessible to your computer. The TV is becoming an oddball piece of technology. Buy a big screen for the wall of your living room, and wirelessly connect your video games or computer as necessary.
2008-09-17 09:11:45 UTC
I'm not waiting for much to happen with TV. Unfortunately, I feel the programming is so poor that certainly no new technological innovations will be able to help. I feel that the content should be improved before worrying about other improvements. It needs to be worth watching to spend any effort on technology.

I'm really not trying to bash TV. I just honestly feel it's no longer worth watching.
2008-09-17 06:01:51 UTC
First, I would like to see the cable companies stop charging us extra to receive HDTV. This is now main-steam technology and should be included. They charge for the boxes, then the channels, so I have duplicate channels just to have the HD version, but I can't drop the other version. Enough!

Next, I would like to pick and choose the channels I want to pay for. No more basic, expanded basic, tier this and tier that. If I have 7 channels I like to watch, then let me pay for those channels and nothing else. I know this could create challenges on the advertising end, but we could always (reasonably) pay by what we watch, in addition to the channels we already get.

Make the cable box smaller and create clever ways to disguise what it is. I am sick of looking at that big clunky thing.

More "on demand" programming and speed up the rewind and fast forward.

Have the cable tech mount your TV and hide the wires. Even if it costs extra, it is worth the charge.

I see more interaction with TV shows by the viewers - from voting for contestants on reality shows a la American Idol, to possibly even shows that are reminiscent of those 'choose your own adventure' books that we read as kids.

Another logical progression, given the internet, is more shows like Lost or Heroes where you have to have seen every episode for it to make sense. Before the days of DVR, streaming video, or even VCR's, if you missed an episode of a show, you missed it, and there was no seeing it again unless you happened across it on reruns. Since most people don't put so much importance on TV to make sure to catch something every single week, and keep up with any time slot changes, shows like Lost wouldn't be so popular if viewers didn't have a way to catch up on their own time.

However, with this ability to watch TV on their own time, networks will have to go further and further to get people to watch TV shows when they actually air. This may include stuff like giving people some sort of code to enter on a website that grants them access to exclusive content shortly after the show, or free media during the show, or running contests or something where the viewers enter online or via cell phone during the show, and the winners are announced later during the same episode.

There will probably be a move towards fewer commercials and more product placement as DVR grows in popularity. People will be able to skip a Coke commercial, but they won't be able to skip a character holding a bottle of Coke in their hand during the show.

I could also see optional content filters where networks encode information about the levels of sex, violence, language, etc into their programs, and then parents have the options of setting their DVRs to skip or edit out objectionable material. However, this could work the other way, so that you could turn on an 'adult' setting and have access to the 'uncut' versions of stuff or deleted scenes that would be too racy or controversial for network or prime-time TV. This would be more for imported shows like Torchwood , 'Pay Cable' shows like Sex and the City, or R-rated movies that today are rerun on basic cable with some of the racier or gorier parts cut out.

I realize that you are asking about technology, but what I would like to see is some decent programming. The ability to choose which programs I would like to have, not some package that includes a bunch of programs that I will never watch. Last night there was not one show on that I wanted to watch. So much of what is coming out is trash.

I once read an editorial in Sci Fi Channel's magazine asking viewers to watch their shows in real time as they were aired.

I felt compelled to write a response which, in part, read, "... I hate to be Darwinian about it, but, adapt or die."

I'm expecting "regularly scheduled programming" with "available for download next Tuesday," or whatever.

I expect a wider acceptance and use of mobile devices that blend phone, TV and internet and do so less expensively than current services.

Advertising agencies need to use their touted creativity to implement their client's ads using these developing technologies. Advertising at large could be in a position to drive development of devices that are marketing friendly, but privacy secure.

Input from many sectors could create an effective infrastructure quicker than any one vendor or single industry sector.

I pay a lot of money for a premium subscription satellite television service in Australia.

Everything is good, EXCEPT for the adverts. Why so many adverts? I paid for the dish, I paid for the decoder box, I paid for the installation, I pay a (quite high) monthly fee, yet I still have to suffer adverts.

The promos for shows on different channels in my subscription package are bad enough, but then there's the mobile phone download adverts. The overabundance of these adverts makes me more than a little frustrated.

Seeing as I already pay through the nose for my subscription, why do I have to suffer adverts as well?

Right now I am a cable subscriber but my primary tv viewing is from my computer. I have a 37in" HDTV monitor hooked up to my desktop. I watch/listen to streaming shows, movies, news and music. I have a wide preference of entertainment that cannot be satisfied with the current cable providers. Even satellite isn't enough. I would like for my pc and my cable to be concider to be one stand alone multimedia center. instead of waiting for a show to come on I can just type in the name of the show and watch it whenever I want.

I quit watching television and ended my cable tv subscription:

Why:

Reality tv shows ad nauseum;

Lack of good unbiased journalism, real reporting, there's too much politiking not enough realism.

There are few good craft channels. I wouldn't mind seeing a channel entirely dedicated to knitting, another channel dedicated to woodworking or welding.

The History channel is a joke. It has become Halloweenish, biased, and with an unbelievable emphasis on exploiting the less interesting side of History. There is more to History than the Mediterranean.

If I never see another reality tv program again it won't be to soon. Ii hate them. I would like to see some really good sitcoms like 2 &1/2 Men and shows like Frasier, and Raymond and Seinfeld. The sitcoms today except for 2 &1/2 Men are just terrible. I hate programs about law and police and violence and hospital shows. They are so depressing and boring. I would like to see something light and fun. I want entertainment and not real life.

The main scenario I would LOVE to see happen with TV is being able to purchase channels WE choose - with no commercials, or at least very minimal. Charges could range from $1 to $10 per channel depending on their level. That way we could bundle our favorites and not have to put up with all the stupid channels and commercials. I'm so annoyed that we pay for TV just to watch junk and stupid commercials. I discontinued TV several months ago and haven't really missed having it.

I predict that the regular channels will further degenerate into a cesspool of reality shows, infomercials, and pundits shouting at each other, and anything worth watching will only be available on pay per view and premium channels. Also, televisions will be programmed to target ads to television viewers based not only on the show they are watching just then, but on their overall viewing habits. Eg. if my television knows I watched every rerun of Law and Order, then my infomercial viewing would be periodically interrupted by announcements about a murder mystery movie available on pay per view. And if my television decides I must be over 50, it will try to sell me boxed sets of oldies music.

Honestly, I think the TV industry is going to crash and burn very soon. All this "HD" is making people realise that there's more to life than sitting on a couch all day eating lays. Why? Because they see how beautiful the lights in Las Vegas are due to the high picture quality and they want to go there instead of just watching it. We'll soon realise that the world is our TV (I know that sounds hippie-ish but it's true) so why do we need to spend half a lung on a flat screen HD Plasma bla bla bla... That's just my opinion though .
2008-09-16 13:19:59 UTC
The end of tv commercials. Or a forced wider variety. So that I don't have to see the same one 10 times during 1 program.

I wish we could just have a list of our options and choose what we want to watch on TV, when we want to watch it. We are self-employed and work odd hours. It would be great to watch "Boston Legal" or "20/20" in the morning or afternoon if we wanted. Whatever is out there in TV library-land should be made available whenever anyone wants to watch it. Boy would that cut down on Infomercials, reruns and the like. And it would also make the programs more competitive, thus more enriched and substantial!

* Custom Cable Packages - You only get and pay for the channels you actually want. You shouldn't have to pay for channels that you never watch.

* The Option of Commercial-Free Television - You have a choice - either get cable for free and have to watch commercials (because the advertisers are more or less covering your cable cost) OR pay for cable and not have to watch commercials.

* You Pick the Times -You get to watch whatever shows you want when you want, not just when they air. Some shows are already available on-demand, but it would be nice if all programming was like that. No worrying about having to set the VCR to record (for those of us who still have one) and no worrying about having to TiVo anything. No being frustrated that you missed a show completely because you weren't aware it was even on.

* While watching cooking shows, one click of a button on your remote will email you the recipe(s) from that episode. No more trying to scribble it down as they go or having to look it up online later.

* I don't want Smell-O-Vision - my mouth already salivates when seeing food on TV - I don't want to be tortured even further by having to smell it. If you think America is overweight now, just think what would happen if we could smell the yummy food on TV.

I'll think of more later... but that's it for now...

Well you can like favorite a bunch of shows, then the TV will be able to tell what shows are similar and what you would like.

Oh, and also subscribing to TV shows to know when there is a new episode coming out or something important happens that you missed, you can get a recap or see when that eposode will happen again.

Or if you are just jumping into a series like 2-3 seasons late, you can see instantly what you will need to know like who is who and their relations and stuff.

Thanks!

it will eliminate TV "schedules" and the need to program in "blocks" ... consumers will be able to watch what they want WHEN they want (with the exception of sports, which consumers will want to watch LIVE)

there will never again be huge ratings shows like FRIENDS or COSBY because of the tremendous increases in CHOICE.

pay TV (HBO, SHOWTIME) will probably have to become Free as Pirate sites already have all of these shows available right now online for free (oddly, there are sponsors on those Pirate sights -- Including companies like Verizon).

more branded entertainment / product integration.

fewer "stars" will emerge. we already see this ... most of today's really big stars have been famous for a decade or more. look at the movies, it's all the same people. the increase in choice is colluding the talent market, making it hard for "the next Will Smith" to pop and SUSTAIN.

more interaction with TV, being able to buy products you see in shows, etc.

unfortunately, probably a lot more Reality TV (cheaper to produce and easier to allow UG content).

more multi-plaformed entertainment. shows with some interactivity to encourage consumers to "watch" or follow a story on their cell phones and within video games.

I wish television programming was more intelligent. (There is a "brightness" knob on the TV set but it doesn't seem to work).

Actually, I'm sick of so-called "reality" programming. It is programming for people that don't want to have to think. They believe it is actually reality, instead of scripted, which it most absolutely is. Of course these are the same people that think pro wrestling isn't fake.

Seriously, enough of the mind numbing reality junk. Hire some decent writers and put some intelligent programming on. If 95% of America doesn't understand it, then let them watch cartoons.

I see online television and online movies which are preprogrammed coming into play. Commercials are a thing of the past.

Even with lower film quality, a decently play-able online video of a TV program is better than waiting to watch the program from the TV, waiting, until the scheduled time.

Radio and Television I think, are quite similar in their initial concept.

Radio provided news and both fictional and non-fictional entertainment. The rise of television, in many ways, forced radio into a corner primarily associated with music, and just music.

Satellite radio, I think, has done a lot for radio specifically by grouping together genres of music for the listener. Additionally, listeners looking to explore a new genre or discover a new series of musicians can do so much more interactively and (though determined by the intellectual capacity of the listener) intelligently.

With regards to television, and specifically the entertainment aspect not necessarily television technology, I am waiting for television that I can explore in a more personally, creatively stimulating way. Though Verizon can't necessarily create new networks and new programming, it can support the growth of networks that intended to stimulate the viewers who are looking for substance rather than generic fictional entertainment (not that fiction is bad, but in excessive void of substance). I'd like to be able to sort through available programming based on the intentions of the show much like I can sort through music by the intentions of the genre on Sirius.

Radio:

Jazz music.

-Fusion

-Lounge

-Swing/Big Band

60's.

- Psychedelic

- Pop

- "Motown"

- Rock

Television:

News.

-Satire

-Liberal

-Conservative

-World

-Science

-Arts

Drama.

-Real life

-Fantasy

-Inspirational

-Crime/Detective

-Problem Solving

What I'm suggesting is that by changing the cataloging of television to be more like Sirius, television will become more interactive and the DVR technology will allow you to control what you take in. Cataloging the programming and making it available to the viewer also would inspire new "genres" of entertainment based on the demand from the expanding viewers. I think the reason so many television shows fail, is because they can't isolate or target a specific audience. If you consider the success of reality television shows, I think you'll have your logical solution.

The Technology changes are small and will continue to be compared to the perverted , immoral content of of shows that dysfunctional writers and producers call entertainment. I see a** holes in the real world and don't care to watch them for entertainment.

Most reality shows suck but it's cheaper to put on the air than shows with good actors. And the ones with known actors are immoral and show people a their worst.

SEEMS LIKE T.V. HAS REALLY GONE DOWN..TOO MUCH JUNK FOR THE CHILDREN TO WATCH. THE TEENAGERS ARE BAD ENOUGH AS IT IS WITHOUT BEING INFLUENCED BY MORE. AS FOR TECHNOLOGY, WE WILL ALL BE REPLACED WITH ROBOTS SOON ENOUGH. SOME OF THE THINGS THE MEDIA SHOWS, SHOULD BE KEPT OFF THE AIR. THERE'S TO MANY PEOPLE OUT THERE NOW, THAT WILL DO THE SAME THING . BAD THINGS! WE NEED SOME NICE CLEAN PROGRAMS ON. REALISTIC PROGRAMS..WHO WANTS TO SEE THINGS LIKE THE BEST DANCER, THE BIGGEST LOSER, THE STRONGEST MAN OR WOMAN? GET BACK TO THE REAL WORLD..IT'S MUCH BETTER.!!!

TV AS MEDIA IS DEAD AS DEAD FISH

I'm not big friend of microsoft but Steve Balmer was right when he said in one interview a few months ago that print media won't exist in a decade. TV might last even less.

My experience:

Bought Pinnacle TV USB stick and dumped my TV in dumpster.

Computer is just so much more sophisticated and gives much more choices regarding content (both how unlimited choices can be offered and it can be viewed at any time).

http://freetube.110mb.com

http://www.hulu.com

Choice is still lousy online but that will change quickly.

TV and newspaper businesses are just made for extinction.

Everything will be online. Sooner - better.

Limiting factor is only bandwidth - all other infrastructure is already here.

HEY VERIZON !

JUST COPY FREETUBE (link above)

EVERYTHING ACCESSIBLE FROM ONE WEB PAGE - EVERYTHING ONLINE - EVERYTHING ON DEMAND

AND YOU WILL RULE THE WORLD

I think making regular television 3D like or virtual would be coming pretty soon. I also think television will become more and more like a computer since a lot of people already rely on their computers for some forms of media, maybe a touch screen interface with your television too.

I don't know, but for me, if TV was not regularly scheduled, I would never watch it. I like having certain programs on at certain times, if I DVR something, I seldom watch it because it's not the same to sit down and control TV, I need some guidance!

Internet based TV - we'll be able to watch a wide variety of programs from all over the world using the Internet, and it will be for free. Of course we will still have to pay our ISP for bandwidth.

I see paid cable TV and satellite TV going away. Much like expensive long distance phone service went away. Now with VoIP and Skype we can make international phone calls for next to nothing or for free.
2008-09-16 10:42:34 UTC
well come February 17, 2009. all tvs will become digital (DTV) as required by law. unless you have some cable, or a Satellite provider, you'll need a converter box. it will effect any tv that requires those rabbit ear antennas, any tv that you might have in the kitchen or garage. with out the converter box, a cable, or Satellite provider, you won't be able to watch any tv at all. all tvs without these things will go blank or static view.

watching tv for free will be the thing in the past.

I think tv producers will move on to offer databases of programs off whom viewers can choice to show whenever theyre like. It will give more freedom for the audience to see what program theyre like to when theyre like to. Internet is begining to show this features but I think it could be done for youre regular tv set as well.

As for what kind of tv program well see Ill think were over the hump in the reality program flows and that means that reality will move to a more mature, less big brother and survivor style programs.

Furniturning and designing your homes is running well and is a good expample of what I call feel good reality. Reality that is about making people happy with theyre life rather than humiliating them. Extreme home makeover is an example of that category.

Game shows will live as long as the tv does. We want to be entertainned and there is an endless flow of program showing both contestors and fames in different competions of more or less serious nature.

Drama on tv seams to take over hollywood role as a pine in the *** towards the society showing us the downs off or world giving us new ideas what do to and what to dont. Thus while hollywood is moving much more towards entertaining the audience but that could change depending on who is writing the scripts...

Tv is live and happy but maybe moving over to databases and the net rather than pre set program channels. Johan.

When they don't stretch a 30 minute program into a hour with so many commercials.

When they stop putting all the 'good stuff' on from 10-midnight and make it so people working normal hours can watch it...you can't go to bed at midnight and get up at 6am every morning.

When you can get the channels you subscribe to without having to pay for a box too.
why should you know?
2008-09-15 21:53:04 UTC
I think that we well begin to see television and internet meld together more and more with embedded links allowing people to immediately purchase things advertised in product placements and the like, as well as being able to watch extended scenes instantly if they so choose over a broadband or T1 connection. I don't believe regularly scheduled programming will go away, but it will become supplemented by additional programming. Personally- as far as TV entertainment goes, I see an end to the channel system overall, and more of a search function system, instead... ie... just type in whatever you want to watch, be it the name of the show (CSI), or a network (CBS), and it will just pop up and you can watch without having to figure out what channel it's on.
?
2014-09-20 13:29:15 UTC
One thing that will interest me to see is the direction of advertisement. With such a system, fast forwarding through commercials will only be natural. Internet episodes force you to watch an ad before each clip of the show. What I think we will see more of in the future is product placement. We're already seeing an increase in product placement on TV and in the movies (i.e.: Transformers)

I'm waiting for those awesome video conferencing systems, like the one at work, to go live in the home. I mean, really, why do they need to be so expensive? Aren't they just a camera and an internet connection? I smell pork.. it's time to trim the fat out of the price of those things and get them into my house and my parent's house, so we can have a real phone conversation at Christmas, or any time.

It would be ideal if .. when I vote on a tv show ie Big Brother..that I can check the overall results by pressing a button,or could see on it screen instead we are just being told by the host, that a competitor of a show was the winner, I need more proof as in future I'm not too keen to vote, tho most of the time I don't. lol x

its all going to be one or two appliances, that's all;

your computer and tv will be combined, no tv set/ separate from your wide screen monitor, they will be/ are, one. Your refrigerator and stove are also going to be one;

one side will be stove, you move food from the right to the left before you go to work,a nd it starts cooking at the set hr; all one unit as the tv/computer will be; we have these in a crude, rudimentary way right now, but these products will be refined.

also, your car is going to have not battery/ gas tank as we know them. they will be a small quarter sized batter only, you buy a prepaid electronic card, like credit card are now, and load it with 'time'/ 'credit', then you will slide it into a slot on the dash board, it juices up the battery, much like a portable charger does for your ipod, but this thin card has the power to transfer to your cars battery. You charge the card either at home, or a card station, pay and insert.

pretty cool, isnt it. Very eco friendly.

I look forward to the day that channels are not bundled in packages, (where one is forced to subscribe to stations one does not want, nor ever views, just to ensure getting those stations one DOES prefer). Truly, there is absolutely no need for me or my family to have 150 channels, when our viewing is limited to 12-15 max. Besides, how many religious or wrestling channels does ANYONE need? I think what is needed is a Consumer Line Item Veto, or to put it simply, a check box next to the channels you want, without getting gouged in the pocket book. I fail to understand how these peripheral channels would ever exist if they were allowed to "let the market decide." C'mon. Enough is enough. In the final analysis, people will by-pass "scheduled programming" altogether because of commercial fatigue, strong arm bundling of unwanted channels, and TiVo.

I'm waiting for people to turn off the stupid thing and start talking with each other and dealing with reality, since you ask.

Fifty years of too much tv seems to have produced an awfully stupid and gullible public. Which is great if you selling useless products and promoting questionable political agendas. Not so good if you want an intelligent well informed and healthy electorate.

I have Time Warner and they put like 800 channels, of which I only watch less then 10 channels and have no access to international channels. I don't care for the golf channel, the religion channel and a lot of other channels. There should be more shows on demand. TV should be used for social networking. Won't it be nice to send happy birthday wishes to your sister or other friends and family half across the country via TV? By the way, give me kudos if you end up inspired my any of my ideas if they prove of any worth for you.

Hope that helps.

I would like to see customized programming packages, or day specific subscriptions. Having to buy lifetime and c-net 2 just to get the discovery channel is rather aggravating.

I would also like to see interactive sports programming. If I'm watching a race, I want to be able to just watch one driver for a while, or maybe just one particular camera. If I'm watching a football game, perhaps I'd like to keep a corner of the screen on the bench to see what's happening there.

I absolutely loved Tivo when I had it through Directv. Then Directv switched its boxes to something that is far less user friendly. I would like to see something like Tivo, but also be able to watch a show that I missed. For example, I missed the pilot episode of Fringe and heard it was fantastic. Now I feel like I don't want to watch the series if I missed the pilot. I know certain past shows I am told I can watch on the internet? but I don't want to watch on my computer, can I hook up my computer to the TV? I would love it if I can use my TV as a computer!
2008-09-16 18:58:24 UTC
I'm waiting for the major TV channels or companies (viacom for example) to stop trying to make us watch regularly scheduled programing (by taking all there shows down from the internet) and not letting us see clips (by taking every thing from youtube and suing Google for 1 BILLION with a B billion dollars) They need to understand that it is something that will happen and instead of trying to prevent it they need to deal with it.

Also less Reality TV for Christ sakes it seems like what ever you can think of has a reality show. Let's see Bisexual reality show?- a shot at love with Tila Tequila. A dog grooming reality show- Groomer has it a Reality show about a washed up rapper- Runs House. A reality show about Housewives- Real house wives of Orange county. A reality show about a Nanny on in super nanny. A reality show about kids making there own civilization Already on in Kid Nation. The point is we need less reality on TV.

Finally Get rid of terribley expensive Payper view- I have no problem with paying for something like NFL season ticket. But i don't want to play $34.95 to watch a boxing match or a UFC fight. People have asked "what has happened to Boxing in the United states it used to be alot more popular" it's the fact that you can't get a fight on cable. Then people have also said "UFC was really getting popular but it slowed down" The reason in pay-per-view CBS has shown one UFC event and has another one planned for October if they would show a UFC event monthly it would be so much more popular

I want to become a part of TV. And maybe make it like the internet:

Have a home page, where you can save favorite channels and other stuff.

Have instant messaging, or send a signal to another TV saying "Watch this!" or something.

In the future: Be able to go into the TV or something. You can't really do that...!!!

I'll look forward to this!!!

Thanks!!!

I would love to see a day when we no longer want our televisions. We've have come accustomed to feeling a need, an almost craving for television. We think we need to know what happens to Hugh Laurey on House M.D., or to the meerkats on Meerkat Manor, or wants going on with New York on her quest to become a star. We don't need Viacom telling us what to buy, what to wear, how to live. We don't need the mainstream media scaring the living daylights out of us. We don't need to be a slave to the couch and remote. I think television isn't necessary. Turn of your TV's. Pick up a book. Go outside. Live.
2008-09-16 05:58:59 UTC
I think there will be technology that will allow viewers to immediately purchase products or services advertised on television, and will pay for it through their cable or satellite provider. This would deal with almost anything from infomercials featuring all the "As Seen On TV" products often advertised by Billy Mays or anything made by Ronco, to local companies advertising their products and services. Some will be available for this feature, but not all. For example, if a viewer sees a commercial for a local carpet/upholstery company, they can press a button on their remote that sends a signal to the cable or satellite company, and then they would contact the local company to come out to the customer's home for a consultation. The customer would be billed a small fee for the service. Any additional costs in relation to such services would be billed by the company and must be paid for by the customer. If the customer orders a product advertised, such as anything Billy Mays advertises, or music CD collections, or any other products, the customer would be billed through their service provider, including any shipping and handling costs.

Whenever a customer sees a product on TV he or she would like, all they have to do is press a button on their remote control. It will then take them to a screen, asking them to confirm their purchase choice. They may be asked to enter the quantity of the items they want. I imagine that the cable and satellite companies could work out a deal with the companies that produce and sell the products, such as selling the products as a kit, or limit quantities per customer (no more than three or four per customer).

Again, some products or services might not be available for this. What I imagine would be done for some things like restaurant commercials would be for the cable company or satellite company to flash on the screen the phone number and/or location of the nearest location of the advertised restaurant. For example, whenever a commercial for a major pizza delivery chain is advertised, a screen could appear at the bottom of the screen, giving the phone number to the pizza delivery chain's local store that delivers to the customer's area. Other restaurants, like most casual dine-in restaurants (Olive Garden, Applebee's, Chili's, etc.) would just have a address appear at the bottom, with a phone number.

I'm waiting for television to TRULY fulfill its potential to educate people. All the various science channels are a start, but that's only one area of knowledge out of many. Literature, art, philosophy are neglected; but even more important are the basics - the simple ability to read, write, and do basic math. I'm not saying that I personally know how this will happen, but a medium that reaches into every nook and cranny of American society must have SOME potential for literacy.

I wish there were few reality TV shows, And no TV ads/commercials.

It would be great if they had also put more things. Things that MAKE SINCE. Unlike Phineas and Ferb. Plus, NO crappy channels that have 1 commercial and that's it. Mary-bob sue once said "Mom! Lookie how many channels we have on our TV, 2,000,000!" Well Mary-bob sue had no idea that only 30% of them made since at all. Sorry for ranting! But, I'm sick of things like "hip hop abs" that are 10 hour long commercials....

I would like to see TV cleaned up. But as we are nearing the end time prophecy phase, I do believe that TV will continue to get worse. If it were up to me I would bump the one eyed demon, but my husband likes his entertainment.

TV is all about who is sleeping with who at any given week, and who can out do who to be the worst out cast. And the dead walking the earth is a heavy contender in the wring. Clean family entertainment is on the down slide to almost extinction. TV has went into a downward fall, right down into hell.

SHORT TERM FUTURE: It's going to become cheaper and cheaper to run multiple television channels till there is a point that we have a 24 hour simpsons channel. Pay tv will become a thing of the past (hopefully, because at the moment its **** anyway). Also advertising will become more intergrated into shows and less invasive that we currently have it. Advertising will also become more relevant to individuals and specific locations. The television will also become directly related to the internet, more so than it already is. Tivo seems to have the correct idea.

LONG TERM FUTURE: Well who knows, we can only hope it incorporates the users. In that more senses are used, more interaction with the television. Screens will get thinner and cheaper and more people will have access. Screens will eventually mimic reality to an extent that they have better quality and picture than real life. You might think thats stupid, but it will be like real life, but with better focus and more alive vivid colours.

What seems to be great at the moment is that you can get 10 dollar ebay usb sticks that plug into your laptop/pc and give your hdtv that can be recorded paused and rewound! Thats amazing!

Technology will greatly change the world of television in many ways we couldnt have imagined.

Asmore and more good television shows will be shown.

In the future regular Movie theaters will become absolete, Movies will be aired direcly to us via television. Television shows will become high buget that it will look so much like dat of a movie.

Television will become more and more friendly towards the eyes.

There will be still be scheduled programming but it will be mixed hybrid with internet also comes with option to pay a commercial free preview.

Television in the near future will be exiting as well as innovative as the walls in our room will be laced by light producing silicons that producing near life like holographic images. It will no longer a tv but a virtual room. Screens produce images of fields of flowers, lush green forest and cool seaside beaches. Making feel out in the Field or climb on the mountain.

Tiny little hoses at sides spraying scented water mimicking the scents of flowers and grass as well as spraying salted water of the sea.

The walls covered with sound directing speakers that gives off small shock-waves mimicking humm of bee and the sound of an incoming bike. Giving us the feel of direction might dat be of a rushing ball or gushing falls.

We will no longer have remotes.... Well have pressure jackets instead. It

will be hightech, covered by pressure sensitive protrusions that it can receive signals from our very movement. It may change a channel or scenery with a flick of finger or blink of our eyes. Also its skin are embeded with air pumps dat gives off pressure giving us the feel of a touch and warmth of a hug recieve from a love one from a far city.

Also can turn into a joystick, much like wii fit and wii controller rolled into one touch suit. Where eigther play life like golf or a top an aerobics game as well as do ballroom dancing.

A player will have an array of virtual dress to choose and freely picks for the occation.

It will be connected via internet. Where you and a love one spend time together. Might that having dinner, playing nice game of bowling, a date under the moon. Also can connect with large group of people much like a popular MMo. Have disco party with only friends, pool party, birthdays and play virtual role playing games.

Now thats reality tv.

Polution, life in the cities, spending evening away from home, noisy neighborhood, smaller housing, crowed trains, We will always be lured by the feel of sight and calmness of nature.

Scheduled programming will fall to the wayside as IPTV (TV over internet) offers users the ability to select shows and even specific episodes as if they were saved to their personal computers. All of this, of course, will be available via a broadband connection and delivered directly from the host to the user's TV.

I'd like to see cable and satellite be made more affordable. Also, something should be done about the continuing downward quality of what's shown on TV. There should be more family-oriented programming and less drama. Other answerers have stated that they'd like to see less reality shows, I must concur with this statement.

IBM had the commercial to illustrate my point (the one from about 5+ years ago where a traveler walks into a hotel and ask what they have on tv...her response

"Any show, Any Language, Any Time..."

As bandwidth continues to increase and with the advent of bigger storage space, I am looking forward to all shows on demand.

It is slowly happening starting with Hulu on the computer.

Well, I think more and more TV programs will become available online, which is grest for people like me who love to watch TV but don't have time to actually sit in front of the TV set. For example, I found this site recently: http://tv.blinkx.com - you can find a ton of TV shows here, all free!!

Ultimately, I imagine that consumers will directly purchase individual episodes of shows over the internet, just like they buy individual songs from itunes now.

But, just like itunes hasn't replaced radio, there will always be a place for streaming TV stations.

I'd like to say that this would encourage higher quality programming, but movies use the direct sale model now, and most of those are drek...

TV has become a total waste. You can dress it up with high definition technology but the culture, the programming is utter garbage.

Society is better off without the damned idiot box!

Hopefully will stop having so much soap opera it's really annoying. I also think their should be channels for japan and mexico to show their shows on american tv(with english subtitles of course). We should be able to feel apart of a show with the smell, and actual hearing of whats happening in the shows. This is just my opinion. Also I hope tv remotes one of these days will skip commercials because commericals are annoying aswell but I think that ain't going to happen in the future.

I envision a scenario where people are allowed to watch cable TV that they pay for and not have to sit through numerous commercials.

To have channels solely for How to's the whole day. Taking polls from the viewer through internet and answering them live or schedule another hour of how to for the polled topic. Similar like here on yahoo answer though it will be a convergence of TV and Internet. We ask. They answer. They demonstrate live how to do it.

Less marketing/commercials, product placement and other idiotic practices to force us into blindly choosing consumptive practices.

Better, far better writing for all shows, including network t.v.

More relevant choices for the customer instead of what the agencies decide.

Maybe no advertising.

The ability to actually GET MORE of what the customer actually wants with cable, satellite and internet. Seriously, why pay for 300 channels of crap? Maybe we don't want sports. Maybe we don't want cooking shows. Maybe we don't want crap. Quality is up to the choser, not the agency.

I am still waiting for all tv commercials to be broadcast in widescreen format. It is very frustrating so see broadcasts for tv commmercials to switch back in forth all the time from standard to widescreen. [Even through my HDTV can change the format to fit the screen, I can still tell when it changes. I can skip some commercials with a Tivo, but not all of them.]

P.S. I stopped buying all products broadcast in 4:3 format.

In our house, regularly scheduled programming already is a thing of the past. We record everything we watch on DVR and watch it at other times. I hardly ever watch a program when it is actually on.
2008-09-16 18:51:54 UTC
First off, I'd like to see the volume on commercials turned down about 90%. Then, I'd like to see more educational TV... I mean, truly educational, not this stuff on Discovery, History, and National Geographic channels... In fact, the only reason a person should have to go to school is for science labs, sports games, or band class concerts... Everything else could be done from home. Also, I'd like the ability to see anything on demand instead of having to record it on DVR or wait for it to come on... Or, the ability to subscribe to only the channels I want. I hate having all these channels I don't watch at all. Oh yeah, I'd also like to see it be affordable (if not FREE like it is in Monaco)... I know many people that can't afford cable, especially internet. Finally, I'd like to see the intolerant control freaks get the stick out of their butt and their finger off the censor button and even go as far as to show us what people on the other side of the planet are watching. All you religious folk and parents who want to keep our children from seeing or hearing certain things are only making it harder for them to accept reality, then again, control freaks are a huge part of reality.

first off, i'm sorry if i repeat what others say seeing as how there are hundreds of responses but here's what i what to see.

1. the ability to choose the channels i want without having to pay for channels i don't want.

2. a truly interactive tv experience without needing a cable/satellite box (tv listings, show info, dvr, and interactive commercials)

3. for interactive commercials to work you come to my next point, deliver the programming through the internet, allowing you to click on links in the ads with your tv remote.

for one thing take off all these sports shows.sick of seeing all sports on tv.id put sports pay per view.next i would clean it up a bit,no commercials with guys playing songs singing about viva viagra, and ceialis commercials at dinner time ,how discusting.i would put more art and decent music on.like concert footages from concert that were video taped.like more classic rock, blues, jazz.not not new crap thats out there.something good and intelligent type music.no hip hop, rap, boy bands, and pole dancer girl singers.

next it would be cool to combine your tv and computer together,so that we all could be famous if chosen to do so.not just these untalented actors/actresses out there now.like we could have our own reality program.just all you need is a web cam to do it,and put in on tv through your computer.

no infommercials what so ever.

I would like to be able to choose the channels I receive. Basically make up my own package- instead of having a bunch of stuff taking up space. I would also like to see the DVR's record more material- or just be able to look up a program and pick which episode/season I would like to see at anytime. Not on a pay per view- that's to expensive.

There are definitely too many channels, a lot of channels are owned by bigger networks and they just recycle the same shows over smaller channels that they own to make it appear you are getting more for your money. In reality, you are not and we all pay for it. I think it's ridiculous for the consumer to pay the prices we pay just to watch TV. All this does is make the big corporations even richer than they already are.

More good moral stories and less evil and Reality TV. The evil movies are just teaching others how to be evil. And Reality TV is so boring. Are we running out of good writers or what?

I miss the good shows because the Reality shows come on first, before the good one, so I just go to another Channel.
2008-09-16 09:39:15 UTC
I want to see an end to ALL TV programs with cussing on them! And an end to all programs with witchcraft on them as well. Then lying to people about it saying it's only a TV show, what's the big deal....

I do wish they would program the remote controls to make some type of noise when you misplace them. Just have a button on the TV to push when you do.

Stop the cable companies from bribing local government.

For cable companies to be no longer to say, you can't get all of the channels unless you get our converter box. Knowing good and well the only reason that's true is because of the way they program it from the beginning...not because they have to.

Or, make it were all of the TV companies make their TV's with the converter boxes in them.

Have all TV stations broadcast in 5 to 1 surround sound.

As for TV entertainment itself, go back to making shows like they did in the '50's and '60's. I still like the Honeymooners, Flintstones, Hogan's Heroes, Green Acres and Batman, just to name a few. But don't go out there and try to make remakes of them. Because to me, you can't improve on them...Like after Mrs Burns past away (from Burns and Allen) Mr Burns try to find another couple to take their place and the show was never as good.

I can barely keep up with what we have now!

Basically, I'm not much of a t.v. person. I like people and being outside. So, I don't much care about t.v. I'd be happy with just a few channels, like when I was a kid (remember just having channels 2, 4, 7, 20, 50 and 56?)

About technology and if scheduled programing will be thing of past: I don't thing so because in scheduled programing we can decide what we want to see for example: in Funny channels are funny movies,in horror channels are horror movies etc. so in my opinion this won't be a thing of past.

I, like the vast majority of consumers, are awiting the opportunity to customize my channel programs. I currently have 302 channels, of which I will never watch 285 of them. Yet channels I would watch are either not available., or require upgrade packages.

Cable marketing is suffering from greed. Cable companies provide channels they are being paid to air, regardless of the wants of the consumer. They have the capability to allow consumers to choose their programming, but opt to not do that. I will happily replace the 22 foreign language channels with ESPU.

i would love to see more interesting programming at nite...informercials have taken over...the "premium " channells show a handful of B movies over all their channells. 12 movies shown over 8 channels isn't much of a choice..i hope in the future they hire more program directors with experience instead of fresh from what ever vo tech they come from. The baby Boomers are here and we demand more quality oh keep trying to put commercials on every channell at the same time...it will never work.

TVs will be holograms. Maybe we will be able to view what we want, when we want. Other people sitting in the same room will view something else. We will use gestures to change and later even our mind. Maybe later we will modify the stories. We will see what we want to happen. We will see whenever and wherever we want.

Like, in the bus or in air, press a button on a module and zap comes the hologram screen in the air over it. We are thinking in this way now and maybe many people out there are amused. But later, we will be normal over all this and be amused about what people used to think in 2008...

I think that since reality tv is so cheap to produce as compared to sitcoms and since they are ratings giants, that sooner or later all tv will be reality tv. the question i have is about once fictionalized reality tv seen on movies like Running Man and Death Race, how long until they are real and being broadcast.

- Less "reality" TV programming

- More web based episodes (I rarely watch TV on the TV lately other than a few episodes or sport events)

- More responsive digital TV guides. The one currently offered by FiOS is somewhat sluggish.

- More intuitive digital TV guides. Look at user interface designs to make them easier to find what you are looking for.

i think tv is just about as good as you are going to get it, if you change any thing else its likely to not be for the good. I am all for change if its for the good but i think tv has gone far enough. If you to add something good to tv make tv land network put mama's family on their programming line up. America is suffering because these tv networks wont put mamma's family in thier programming and i think its bad for americas tv experience

Completely a-la-carte programming. I don't mind paying a small amount for a show I like so that I don't have to watch commercials and don't have to pay for the tremendous amount of junk I don't watch. The smallest cable packages are currently like 100 channels, only three or four of which I ever watch. Pay as you go is a perfect market and one I think could benefit both consumers and service providers.

What I am waiting to see is for shows to more often transcend the formulas that they were made for and become what we consider now to be exceptional, in other words for the exceptional to become the norm, and also for us to get past our fear of the "seven dirty words" and to also realize that depictions of sexuality are infinitely less harmful than depictions of violence (while remembering that while it involves the sexual organs, rape is violence, not strictly intercourse, despite its involving the sexual organs), and for us to grow up as a nation in general about our entertainment. Sure, sex and violence of an extreme nature shouldn't be shown during times when children are likely to be watching, but then it falls to the parents to make sure children aren't watching at that time, either by means of closely monitoring their bedtime, or judicious use of the V chip in their TV. What it comes down to is that what I'm waiting for is more responsibility to be shown in general.

I would like the ability to have a more interactive television. For example, if I am watching a movie on television, I would like the ability to pull up IMDB.com right next to it and check out the box office take or find out about more trivia on the movie I am watching.

Or, if you are watching the food network and see what they are cooking, wouldn't it be nice to print the recipe or download it to your phone right off your television? I also would like the ability to watch a "made for tv movie" in its original format if i choose to. I can't stand how they always hack up these great movies to squeeze it in their time frame or edit it for the networks.

Instead of having a thousand channels where you only actually watch 75 channels or so, I would like to choose the channels I buy rather than the top 250 or whatever. Interactive TV. Different products would be made apart of the show and I would pick and choose which of these products I wanted to get more info on.

1st of all I am waiting for The Donald to get bored and find someplace else to pet his massive ego IE: take all the money for all of those stupid ( lack of reality ) reality type shows he owns and spend his money on a decent hair cut * and possibly some hair transplants.. hey perhaps he could do somthing to contibute to ethics or common decency and humanity rather than eploit the intellectually challenged aka unibrow type folks . and the rest he should spend on a good therapist for his egomanical psychosis..

less adult oriented ads lots of folks are offended by that crap.

oh and I want to thank verizon for blowing my home theater system speakers> seems they pump a 50% plus signal boost on some comercials ( as if they arent annoying enough already ) was watching a movie with a 1200 watt home theater system I paid over $ 8,000.00 for and sudden and intentional signal volume surge for a commercial over taxed my 8.1 surround sound system speakers and blew 5 of them... jackasses!

These days we have cable and on demand movies, and netflix who offers basically any movie available.

Netflix offers a watch now program. Maybe Netflix will offer all movies for watch now soon.

Anything else is speculation.

It'd be pretty cool if we had channels, then sub channels, then maybe even deeper than that later on. Like we have 500 channels and it's annoying trying to look through them all, and a self choosing system on the tv that records what genre's and types of shows you've watched to tell you what kind of show what you'd like.

I am waiting for these "paid programing" shows to boil themselves down to 10 minutes a piece and not take up 6 hours of my much loved shows....i have stopped watching certain channels because they allow our shows to be replaced by these blood sucking advertisements..whoever this may concern: people have different schedules: if i wake up extra early or go to bed extra late that doesn't mean im vulnerable to buying a gadget i dont need!!!!!!gimme my family guy, court shows and sitcoms. I would like TV networks to put more shows on-line. They still make money from the ads before the show, and on the web site. This way if you miss one show from your favorite series, you don't have to wait and buy the DVD. Also, make the clips available internationally not just in the US.

TV would be awesome if you were able to download whatever show you want to watch. I can think of several TV shows from my childhood that I really wish I could watch again, but I haven't found anyway to do that other than downloading them on the computer. If there was some way to download any show, anytime...I'm sure we would all be willing to pay. I know this is much like On-Demand...but I want it to be bigger...a huge database of every TV show you could ever think of from the last 50 years or so...It would be huge.

The ability, during sports events, to choose the camera feed that you would like to see. This would allow each of us to be our own director. For some sports events, such as hockey and soccer, I would prefer to see the whole field or ice. For others a close up is better. Let the viewer decide.

Allow me to watch programs when I want to watch them - from your end. Give me a selection in my FiOS menu to watch all the previous House, CSI, Criminal Minds (etc) from a menu selection. Not just for just a few shows and a few channels. For any major network show or regularly scheduled cable channel series.

(no DVR, no Tivo - ick - too much effort)

Allow me to take my TV with me. If I am a customer with service(s), let me port my service to my laptop or handheld/phone. Serious, I want streaming History Channel when I travel, wherever I travel. :)

It would also be interesting to see how services tie into my home. Can my phone/cable/internet service help me monitor and manipulate items in my home? Bring me home security options with services.

PS - FiOS rocks! I have been a loyal FiOS customer for over a year.

I would like to see more channels on a basic cable/satellite subscription. I hope this is in the future- 'cause there are some channels that I would love to watch, but can't afford.

Unfortunately, I also see more commercials and higher costs of cable/satellite subscriptions because people can watch some of their favorite episodes for free on the internet. I hope that's not the case! :P

Honestly, I see TV as a waste of time. Our family gets no broadcast tv via cable or dish. We rent movies and videos and get news on the internet. Our kids are not being "raised" by tv, nor are they being socialized by it. Most tv is detrimental to developing children. We now have time to talk, read, play games, do sports, take walks, etc, etc. I recommend cancelling your tv service. Your life will improve.

1)Ala cart programming

2)portability- ease of transfer from TV to Ipod to PC etc

3.) More Internet integration of TV

4.) Wireless TV (cables hookups not needed in each room)

Those 4 things would be a great start!

I'M WAITING FOR SOMETHING INTERESTING and it would be good to see different things on each channel, as things are now in England, If you can't stir up an interest in cooking, gardening or house repairs you have very little to choose from. I often use my TV as a radio it bumbles away as I sit tapping on my keyboard, I hear more than I see.

TV programming sucks. I wish they'd take viagra--let's get laid commercials off prime time shows like afternoon football games. And eventually--people --like the cruel romans will want to see people getting killed for real and raped for real--or having their uterus looked at on camera-or watching women put a tampon on...I hate TV shows today.

What ever happened to TV entertainment. is my question?

I watch movies on my VCR --or the news--nothing else...it all is so bad.

How bout we erase the News. Its full of fear anyway and clogs up my TV Screen. More educational channels should be access-able and less reality T.V, we all know that people are full of drama, is anyone actually helping to stop the drama. War in Iraq is enough for one day or 100 centuries. Their should be more international shows as well.

I personally think TV is poisonous and contributes to the obesity in society anyway.

I would like to see a really influential show (with style and music) that revolutionizes television, like Miami Vice did in the mid-eighties.

Oh and as far as technology goes, I would like DVD/Blue-ray discs to be the size of a USB stick (not just for mini players) but for actual entertainment centers. And make them unscratchable. We could insert this small device into our tv and *viola* no DVD/Blue-ray player needed.

There should not be a schedule of programs , it should be a huge database of shows where you can watch whatever you want and the billing should be done accordingly , similar to conditional access system but in a way different !

I would really like to have something on worth watching..like bonafide family programs like I watched as a kid (Little House on the Prairie, the waltons..Dr Quinn.) Something with morals, and good and clean I'm so sick of seeing blood, guts, autopsies, sex and violence that i'm considering giving away my tv..and forget the reality shows..that's just got too carried away.

To be able to watch what you want whenever, absolutely whenever you want. I live a military life so I miss a lot my fav shows. If it came on tv, I should be able to watch it regardless of time and location. Like a virtual server or database or something. I'll buy that for a dollar!

Playlists:

Instead of channels, I want to be able to create a custom playlist of my favorite shows basically creating 'My Channel'. Every member of the family could have their own list. This would work for episodic content and daily news. News could even be broken down by subjects, like economics, sports and weather for me, politics and entertainment for my wife. These could be downloaded automatically and viewed on demand. This would be easier than a DVR.

Movie Queuing,

I want my movie que downloaded automatically instead of shipped on plastic DVDs. And if I choose to 'buy' that content, I want to be able to watch it forever just like my favorite VHS tapes and DVDs.

I hope to see TV become all "on demand". With controlled release dates it would be wonderful.

I also hope that there will be subscription options so instead of buying a cable or satellite package with set channels, maybe they could let me pick the ones I want (i.e. only sports and local news channels).

Much of TV entertainment has become shallow, crude, and insults the very values that instill trust, honor, faith, respect and decency. In my home I would like to see shows that fill us with hope, respect and love, honoring real people who do real things. I would like to see lighthearted shows that engage my mind and emotions, challenging others to seek to do what is helpful, right, caring, loving, honoring, and truthful. I've seen about enough blood and guts, illicit sex, manipulative deceptfull, anger and greed. I want to see something that is fun, funny, enlightening, something I and my family can emulate to the betterment of my own family. I want to see things that support what is good, right, and lawful. I want to see love stories without the sexual naughtiness. The shows and movies before 1965 knew how to do that. Those actors knew how to intrigue and thrill us, and draw tears to hour eyes. All of this without the "shock and awe". I want to view wholesome family and love and humor on TV.

Think of the incredible mental and emotional power of "To Kill A Mockingbird" with Gregory Peck. This is what I am waiting to see again. Stories can push us to our best. Stories can teach us. Stories can endear us to those in our lives. Stories can bring peace to our lives. This is what I am still waiting to see in entertainment.

There are lots of shows in which members of the public or celebrities do some sort of performance, have it critiqued by a panel of judges, and voted upon by the viewers. (X-Factor, Strictly Come Dancing.......)

I'd like there to be a TV channel dedicated to these shows, so that they don't have to be on other channels!
2008-09-16 00:52:13 UTC
I'm still waiting for more intelligent shows. Why do the TV producers think we are dummies? And I don't want to watch other people's personal problems on TV (reality shows) because I've got enough problems of my own.

YOU pick what you want to watch and when you want to watch it!

Enough with getting cable/satellite/etc packages where you pay for all the channels but only watch 10% of them!

How about a TV that isn't obsolete in 2 years?

As for TV programming options, how about cable, Verizon, ATT and Satellite not trying to distinguish themselves by offering one great product and one lousy product? How about when you/they suck people in with introductory rates and then jacking up the price?

I'd like to see ALL TV go to a "On Demand" feature. So, you could like make a list of shows you like, for me right now that would be NCIS, Stargate Atlantis, Primeval, and True Blood. Then each week when you have time, you go watch them. My mom does have a DVR now, so I can set it to record all new episodes and go over to her house and watch them when I have time, but not needing to "bogart" her TV at certain times would be waaaay preferable. :)

Near field: 3d TV is the real McCoy this time around, not the gimmicky stuff of the '50s and '60s. Regularly scheduled programming will have to stay with us to fulfill the free airspace in exchange for public service time agreement with the FCC. Cable/Fios/Satellite are under no obligation though. Switched Digital Video is the wave of the near future.

Far field: Full room holographic images we can interact with by wearing a full body tactile response suit. Sword fights, sex, you name it...

I want seamless youtube / satellite / cable / PC-based home videos / and all older technologies like VHS, DVD, or whatever all on one screen.

And I want to be able to get it in any room of the home. Each room has a screen, but only one room has the "server" that runs it all. I can turn the screen on in the bedroom, for example, and it gets signals seamlessly from any source I have access to. Sound also.

I'm also waiting for those big screens to get better at stretching low quality signals nicely onto a high-pixel count screen. Have you ever tried to get a big screen to play even just a normal DVD with decent viewing quality? You can drive yourself nuts! But on a big CRT, it works fine. Why is that? No, don't answer that. I don't care why, just fix it.

Here's a little thing: I'm waiting for a "no show" button on my TV. I can get one for a projector, but why not a TV? I'm sensitive to flashing light (like millions of other people, I have migraines, and that makes me intolerant to flickering light) - and I'd like to be able to hit "no show" to turn off the video display without stopping the playback or the sound when a painful sequence of flickers occurs (such as a battle scene in an action movie).

I'd like to see a "normalize" feature in the sound settings of a TV - and in the stereo system too. I get annoyed by sound getting really quiet and then really loud in videos. I know they're trying to be all theatrical, but it annoys me and I should have a choice.

As far as programming: reality tv ISN'T so stop making it. I'm totally sick of it. How about trying for some real action by showing people in real situations, not ones made up to be "larger than life." Give people real information about life if you're going to try for reality TV. And has anyone heard of "sensitivity" "compassion" "forgiveness" and "mercy"? Why not really challenge yourselves and put some of that on display?

Thanks for asking this question. I've been thinking about this stuff a lot. Good show, chaps!

----- update:

Since I wrote this, I noticed that many news shows have links on their websites for "more information" and the newscast shows you how to access that info from their website after the broadcast. As this phemomenon continues, I expect that someday we will have touch screen TV's that will allow us to "touch here" to download the extra info automatically and immediately. Or we'll have a button on our remote for that. For an example of how this would work, see the TV show, Babylon 5.

I want my OnDemand, and I want programs available via the website of the TV Network.

Technology has encorporated an "I want it NOW" presence.

Regularly scheduled programming is not a thing of the past. My mom, cousin, sister-in-law, and others thrive for their scheduled Prime Time TV programs.

However, I am not able to watch my few shows as scheduled, due to a new baby, and more. I want to be able to tune in for free at the network site, or OnDemand.

I would simply like a YouTube/podcast type service brought to television.

I don't want to WAIT until 8:00 for an episode to come on, I want to be able to pick my own time to watch it the day of release. I want to be able to go into a category, such as "Discovery Channel", and be able to watch any episodes that have been recently released. This is similar to "on demand", but I want my television to be completely on demand! If I want to purchase a movie or episode I just saw for free on television, I want to buy it & have it saved to a hard drive.

I want all episodes, programs, movies, etc. to be saved onto a huge database, and we can just pick & choose what we want to watch from the categories or "channels". Assigned numbers for channels would simply be a thing in the past! Keypads on the remote controls can have letters on the number keys (like mobile phones), so we can simply do a search to quickly navigate to whatever we want to watch!

I think in the future u will be able to choose your view angles, you can decide where the camera views the action from for example. Or you can decide the outcome of a film, u can decide whether the girl goes into the scary room with axe wielding murderer or not.

When the advertising is all product placement and my wife can hit pause on the DVR, hit the purchase button and buy that skirt that Jennifer Aniston has on. At that time the cable/internet/phone company will also be a credit card company and when my cable/phone/internet bill comes at the end of the month, instead of being $99, it will be $1099. And I will pay that stinking bill, because if I don't, my internet will be turned off and that's all I care about.

I don't understand why I can't turn on my laptop and get network tv.

I use cable for DSL.... through a cable company. Why do I have to pay for DSL and Cable, why can't I pay one price and watch all the cable stuff on my laptop and not have to use a tv at all?

And I don't mean watching tv shows on websites, I mean get network tv on my laptop.

I think that companies should bring forward the solutions on :

1. Make it so easier for the consumers that people could carry televisions in their pockets. this would address to the needs of business persons, school students, on the vacation, people who would be waiting for somebody may be at airport, railway stations, etc.

2. shows programmes that solves the problems on mind. this would help in channelizing the persons time in right directions.

3. should be able to fast forward the programmes, this would decrease the dissatisfaction relating the advertisement viewing.

Don't blow off regular programs for baseball ! ! ! ! If I wanted to watch sports I'd tune to ESPN. I used to get all excited to watch Seinfeld. oh, and if computers have a webcam, tv should have a tellycam (?). In fact, maybe they should have TVphones (they already have camphones so why not?)

Oh, and here's a great idea: when the telephone rings or the doorbell rings, there will be an alert flashing on the TV screen, and you get to see who's at the door through your TV.

Well they already have watch-it-when-you-want-it and user-to-tv interaction, so i guess that's it.

to be honest, i wouldn't mind paying for some sort of license that would get rid of commercials entirely, unless it was too expensive. i could understand if it was, though. advertising isn't cheap. \:

Price going down.

2008-09-15 21:58:38 UTC
its all headed to the interenet and its a bad idea.

i think we need to stop advancing tv...it becomes harder for those who dont have the money to advance with it.

or at least if we do advance it, make it optional.

i think maybe what really should be done is work backwards...undo some of the damage that tv has brought.

also STOP WITH THE REALITY TV!!!!

-edit-

i feel we should go back to old programming in a sense, we go back to more family oriented programming and worthwhile acting....

this competition shows and reality just become imitations of another...and i fear that one day thats all that will be on tv.

Those "holographic" TV's drop in price and become better quality. Then commercials die a quick death. I can only dream about no commercials, Tivo is killing them off slowly, but it will be a while.

I see it becoming a more truly interactive medium, where U can be a as much of the plot in the movies/shows. I remember as a kid reading a series of books called, 'choose your own adventure' by pocket books. It was where U could choose which direction the book would go as U being the first person in the story, which in turn would take U to a different scenario, ultimately with various endings. that's one of the things I would like to see happen as far as T.V. shows go. Sorta like Video Game meets T.V. shows and /or movies, except U R the star. Sure would be more exciting than just passively viewing the Boob Tube.

Also I see T.V. as ending up as just another part of the Internet, since information on digital formatting as far as it's concerned is really all the same.

I see all of use buying a computer the size of a old school T.V. tube. It will have a playstation/xbox/wii connected together with the cable/satlite box, having a hard drive of a 1TB, so we can save all the shows we want, the news will be streaming live all the time because every network will have your local news on and the big news fit in if its worth a hear in your location. Thats all we need to learn is to build a computer to do everything for us so we wont need a box, dvd/hddvd/bluray player. It will allow everything to connect. but this would just be some huge mistake causing a monopoly like Microsoft but hey it be nice :D

The biggest change that will evolve from improved technology will be the globalization of television throughout the world. Even with the 400 channels I currently get through my service, almost all of the programming is either from the US, the BBC, or select mixed feeds on one or two international channels. Why, for example, can I go on the Web right now and listen to radio stations from around the globe, but I can't watch tv shows from around the globe whether I'm with AT&T, Comcast, or whatever other provider is available? If television (meaning the box in the living room) is going to remain vital, it has to start mimicking the Web.

3-D TV. It would be like the actors are in the room with you. TV on demand, nothing will be scheduled anymore. A person can pick when, where, and what time they will watch something. Better quality TV as well, no more of the mindless drivel that is much of TV today. Less commericals, if things keep going as they are all TV will be is ads with a few minutes of programming

The right to choose. People who can only access public TV have standard about 5 to 6 channels. These people should be able to access from their TV a network channel that allows them to subscribe to certain channels usually only available on cable for free for a total of 5 to 6 channels. Get me?

I'd like to see TV where regular schedules don't totally go out the window because of sporting events than run long. It's fine if I was watching that game, race, etc. . . but it's insanely annoying if that wasn't something I cared about and I instead wanted to watch what was supposed be on afterwards that's now an hour later than scheduled.

I think that either on-demand sports somehow at the broadcast level (as opposed to cable/satellite, which some people will never decide is worth paying for, as is their choice) or just separate broadcast channels for sports would be great. If I want to watch, I can. . . if I'm not interested, I don't have to.

The separate-channel idea's already dead in my market with current technology, as most affiliates are already using all 4 of their digital channels.

I look forward to being able to watch more television from the English-speaking Caribbean and not have to be force-fed the same routine channels that every cable provider carries all the time.

Technology should be used to bring the world together in something other than entertainment. That will be the only way to transcend the current levels of violence and nonsense seen on tv. The world suffers from too numerous problems; and self entertainment with tv only brings us back to a status quo. Once you figure out how to solve world hunger, wars, whether national or religious, than you will on track to envision of future of tv with an economic purpose as well as a higher level of living for all, than that would be something to talk about and to market.

There will be a constant frame of ads during programming.

TV shows will all be pay-per-view.

Specialty channels will fade out in favor of shows appealing to the lowest common denominator.

Half or more of the programming will be YouTube/ADD style.

i want to have less channels

cause sometimes you're so bored, you look through 400 channels or so, and you can't find anything good

they should have more channels like , mtv BUT WITH ACTUAL MUSIC ON IT, discovery channel & stuff like that. So every channel will have a different genre of tv, you don't have to look all over the place

and i don't want all the cool shows to come on on the same date & time on different channels

and...i want 3-D tv!
