These are all North America standards for TV transmission.

NTSC = Old style analog video (squarish, low resolution)

ATSC = Over The Air digital (digital and HD)

QAM = Digital cable (digital and HD)

This set can work with analog and digital signals transmitted in North America over the air (antenna TV) or via cable. Yes, it can get HD signals if the shows are transmitted in HD.

NTSC - This is your analog TV tuner that is built into every VCR and Television in America. Basically its purpose is to bring in ANALOG broadcasts. Will receive Cable or Antenna Broadcasts. It will be in every TV that you buy.

ATSC - This is the Hight Definition Tuner that by this time next year is required to be in every new television 20" and larger. Its purpose is to receive OVER THE AIR (OTA) broadcasts from local channels via an Antenna, not cable. To utilize this you will need to connect an Antenna, whether a roof top or attic mount and depending on your situation even a table top antenna will work to receive the local HD broadcasts. So when you see the icon in the bottom of your screen now that says available in HD/5.1 this is where you would need an ATSC tuner with an Antenna to receive them that way (or through HD Cable, or Satellite in some cases).

I think the hardware of the actual tuner is virtually identical in QAM or ATSC tuners. They just need to be switched from one format to the other. I think every TV that has an ATSC HD tuner could probably be made compatible with QAM for a few pennies, or maybe a few dollars more.

I think cable companies are using big bucks to discourage the proliferation of QAM tuners. They don't want anyone to cut into their lucrative cable box system, which leads directly to on demand and PPV stuff. It is all about money.

Well a couple of days ago i asked a question about ota and satelites and stuff to understand what i need before i get a tv or HD or anything, and the guy told me before i buy a satelite for OTA hd i should plug in my cable (standard comcast/tw cable) and do a channel search because sometimes it can find HD channels using its built in tuner. I know the LG i was asking about has a built in ATSC tuner but was he talking about a QAM tuner then?

NTSC = National Television System Committee, analog TV standard most common in North America and east Asia, including the United States, Canada, much of Latin America, Japan, and the Philippines.

ATSC = Advanced Television System Committee, digital TV standard that is replacing the aforementioned system. A TV with a ATSC tuner can pick up HD stations, but can only display them at its maximum resolution.

QAM = Quadrature amplitude modulation, for picking up digital cable channels without a set-top cable box.

So, in short,

NTSC is analog

ATSC is digital

QAM is digital cable ready

NTSC=North America

ATSC=Asia/Europe (dont remember which)

QAM=I dont know

And whats funny is you need to pay for those on cable and satelite but on antenna (make sure you have a digital tv converter box or a built in digital signal inside the tv) the HD is free :)
