Im planning to get a new tv, but im wondering if a 40 inch tv is good enough if im viewing it from 8.5 feet away. If not what do you recommend? I know that it normally 1.5 to 3 times the size of the tv, but i want some input on people who actually have a tv with a viewing distance relatively similar to mine. Thanks

I bought a 40" LCD 1080P and my viewing distance is about 8 feet. When viewing HD it is perfect, but when viewing non-HD channels it can get a little pixely.

I used this calculator: http://www.dtvcity.com/lcdtv/lcdscreensize.html

The viewing distance calculator (Link 1) suggest an optimum size for 8.5' viewing distance is >60". Link 2 shows the size/distance relationship is a matter of what resolution material you will be watching. The 60" screen would be appropriate for 1080p material (e.g. Blu-ray). With 720p material you would be fine with a 45" screen, and for SD programming would be best with a 30" screen.

generally for every 5 inches of screen "diagonally" your supposed to sit 1 foot away from the tv.
