How can TV Licensing people tell if I'm watching live TV?

I'm at university, and I am allowed to watch programs on catch-up services like BBC iPlayer without a TV license. If I were to watch live TV, I would need a TV license. I was just wondering how the TV Licensing company, the government or whoever can tell and prove if I were watching live TV without a license. Hypothetically of course ; )

You do not need a TV licence to watch catchup TV, only live TV. If you were to watch live TV then I do not know how the authorities would find out, though. It's just whether you are prepared to take the risk.

Generally they assume that if you have the equipment to watch live TV you will do so, and have to pay. It's up to you to show you don't/can't watch live. If you are living in at uni they will probably insist on a licence anyway.

Note: don't follow other advice to simply ignore them; while they don't have right of entry on a cold call, they can and do come back with court warrants and a police officer if necessary

Most people watch TV online now via laptops/tablets plugged into the TV or directly on a Smart TV. if you install a VPN you pick up Internet via another location so isn't traceable to you and also allows you to watch American TV content aswell.

they can't and don't even have the right to come into your house to check, unless you offer them, for example if you say, oh sure come in and sit down, just generally invite them inside.

i prevented my mom from paying the tv license for over a year.. but you know how mothers are.. always worried that they will get caught and ****.. so one day she went without my knowledge and just paid for a year..

I think it's absolute bullshit. The original reason for a tv license was because of BBC funding but they don't need it anymore, and they cant be bothered to change the law..

but trust me, they have no rights to even step on your private property, let alone come into your house..

I will never pay those scammers a ''tv license''.. something which only happens in the UK.. pfft kiss my ***

EDIT:

to the guy below me, yes they will send a letter but that is just standard since most people watch tv's, but you can just ignore it, they send us loads but we went 1 whole year without disturbing, paying, whatever.. they can suck my left toe!! (unless they have feet fetish)

just ignore those bastards and let everyone know to NEVER let anyone in the house!! they have no right i promise you..

go look up some youtube videos of people not allowing those tv licensers to come in and they aren't allowed, they just go walk away because they have no right!!

when you are watching a movie or tv set it is very easy to get distracted and multi task, where reading a written book, it usually has your full attention!

On the laptop or a PC it would probably be fairly easy, since they would go by the ip address I would imagine.
