PLEASE help with possible broken tv remote?

We've had a HDTV for some time now but for the last few days, the remote's keys have been weird. Some commands work but others, like the guide, don't.

If we put the option for the guide, the captions dissapear but moving the up and down keys work as if the guide wasn't there.

This could be something as simple as weak batteries so change them out first. If new batteries doesn't help and you have either cable or satellite service the next thing I would do would be to turn off the TV and then unplug the Box from its A/C outlet. Wait a minute or two and then plug it back in. When you turn it on it should reset itself. Turn on your TV and see if you've solved your problem. If the problem still exists call your cable/satellite provider, explain your problem and ask for their advice. If they can do a remote electronic reset of their equipment it might solve your problem. If after all of that you still have the problem you might need a new remote because you probably have a fatal flaw in the remote circuitry. That said, if you are using a provider box you might be able to perform the missing functions manually. Check your manual. If you can do that successfully you can pretty much be sure the problem is with the remote and not with your TV. On the other hand if you get your TV signal via an over the air antenna you should consult your TV manual for possible solutions. A final option might be to visit the website of the manufacturer of your TV. If your TV uses a universal remote you should be able to pick up a new one from any TV retailer. If you use a provider for your service they should provide you with any new equipment you might need at little or no cost.

Has anything been spilled on it, like pop? I would take it apart(carefully) and clean it! Sometimes gunk builds up in them and prevents the button pads from making good contact.

If that doesn't work, you may have to replace it or possibly take it to be repaired by a TV repair shop.

Don't take it personal, Did you change batteries? You'd be surprise how many people don't know batteries die.
