I am thinking about getting a HD TV. How do I know what channels I will be able to get? - I thought about asking at one of those Sky TV stands (they have one in our city centre shopping mall), but the guys there just seem to much like sales people for me to want to go and ask them!
Also, are Samsung TV's any good? I have seen one on Amazon quite cheap, but never owned a Samsung tele before!

Samsung TVs are pretty good... I think of them as kinda like the mid to lower end of the main brand televisions. Like someone else said, just don't go for any of the cheaper supermarket style budget brands, and you should be fine.
In terms of what channels you can get, try these sites:
To check for Freeview HD - http://freeview.co.uk/HD
To check for Freeview, Sky HD and Virgin HD - http://www.digitalchoices.co.uk/hd-tv/hd-coverage-checker.html
Those two resources are free :)
You can, as you say, ask in the shops... but you may then have to deal with sales people ;)
Hope that helps!
Ps. re: The Samsung TVs on Amazon... check they are either brand new, or come with a warranty!

When you buy your new telly make sure that it has a HD tuner built in if you want to watch the Freeview HD channels. Most sets do not have an HD tuner and they're sold as "HD Ready". This means that you must rent a Sky HD box to receive the HD channels.
Sky HD boxes cost £10 extra per month rent in addition to the regular Sky subscription. If you want to watch HD films you must pay extra for them. There are better and cheaper ways of getting pay-per-view HD films, for example the BT Vision box.
You can find out what Freeview channels are available by looking at http://freeview.co.uk/Channels. These are available without paying a subscription.
Samsung telly's are good but if you are willing to wait a while and save up a few more ££ then Panasonic or Sony are better.
Whatever you choose you must not buy a supermarket "brand" like Technicka or Tevion or Celcus and suchlike. They're cheap but very unreliable.

if you get a hd tv with freeview or freesat built in you will NOT get any hd channels, the tv has to have freeview HD or freesat HD built in (or both) to get the HD channels, or you could buy a freeview HD or Freesat HD box
with freesat HD you get
bbc 1 hd
bbc hd
itv 1 hd
ch4 h hd
nhk world hd
with freeview hd
bbc 1 hd
bbc hd
itv1 hd
ch4 hd
clirlun hd (wales only)
racing hd (coming soon)
and something else (coming soon)
but the bbc is thinking of getting rid of bbc HD channel and giving the bbc2 the HD treatment
samsung tv's are good but they are not the best, panasonic plasma tv's seem to win more awards for there tv's than any other brand
