I was wondering if i could connect a usb drive to the spot and be able to see the files on it and possibly watch movies from it. The TV is a Sony Bravia.

And the manual doesnt even acknowledge the existence of the spot. It shows a rectangle where its supposed to be but thats about it. No mention of usbs at all.

I know i can connect an hdmi cable from my computer but i was wondering if i could just use a flash drive to watch movies or look at family pictures on the tv without getting out cables

Go to www.sony.com > Electronics > TV & entertainment > Televisions. Under there find your TV model as Sony bravia is not enough. Once you find the model select it and go under specifications. Find the USB section under Convenience Features.

The TV I am looking as has: "USB Application(s) : Photo Viewer (jpeg), Music Player (mp3), Video Player (mpeg1), Video Player (mpeg2 TS) "

Look there for your answer...

There might be two explainations,

1). You got your usb port clogged up by dirt and stuff

2). Your Sony TV doesn't have what is necessary to activate your usb drive. Just like a computer needs a drive to function, your tv lacks just that so files on the usb can not be read or maybe it does have a drive like thing but that doesn't recognize the type of file on the usb drive.

Some TVs (like my LG) have a USB port to display images (like electronic picture frame) and/or play audio files. But the file types that they can access is very limited, on my TV just JPG or PNG image files and MP3 audio files on FAT32 file system. They cannot do movies. Some TVs (like Panasonic) will have an SD card slot instead.

If your docs say nothing about it, the USB may just be a service port for factory programing and configuring the display.

Some TVs have a USB connector for the purpose of updating the set's firmware via a flashdrive. Your owner's manual should explain that if that's the case with your set, or you may have to search your set's model number on-line for the details.
