Hi, we need to replace the small TV in our kitchen. What I'd like is a flat screen TV that we can mount on the wall. But it also needs to have a built -in digital decoder so we can receive all the freeview stations (plus the radio stations). The decoder needs to be "built in " because we don't want a separate decoder with grotty wires trailing about all over the place.

Can anyone suggest what would be the best option for us? ...We're really just looking for a small television and not particularly worried whether it's "HD ready".

The Humax LGB17DTT 17" fits your requirements - from ebay, Currys, etc. Or the Goodmans GLCD17DVBT. Google '17" LCD IDTV' for more alternatives, and other suppliers. If you want a really small one try Maplins - http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=48224&TabID=1&source=1&doy=25m8 - the screen is only 8"

I have thought about this for years, the worst fcuking thing I have ever done was mount up a 50inch in my bedroom! I have had too many bad nights sleep due to watching absolute trash until all hours, but you think i'd learn! I consider it an addiction which has been accepted as the norm, a value and a virtue on a global scale! Family life is very much structured around the box today and this I do not think is a good thing, not so bad watching the odd film or an hour here and there but lets face it children are raised in front of TV, its the cheapest and best baby sitter money can buy. I could go on and on about this but will most likely go back to watching junk in a sec so whats the point :/. Its funny, if you take away the entertainment or information in fact the content in itself, we are essentially sitting for hours on end looking at a square box. Enough said.

You would like a flat screen tv meaning you really only have two possible choices..i.e either you buy a plasma or an LCD type. Since you want a small one I suggest u go for the LCD. The main differences between the two have been outlined below.

Color: LCD TVs are known for their sharp pictures and lively color. An LCD TV’s colors are vibrant and can wow you when you walk into a room. Plasma TVs are known for their wide range of colors and their accurate color reproduction. A plasma TV’s colors are warm and deep.

Brightness: Brightness numbers from manufacturers will mean little because they aren’t measured under real-life conditions. Your own viewing area will play into this considerably. LCD TVs have the reputation of doing slightly better in bright-light conditions.

Black Levels: Plasma TVs generally produce very black blacks whereas an LCD TV will produce a very dark charcoal gray. The very dark gray that LCD TVs produce is sufficiently dark for most people. Many would take it for black if not told otherwise.

Contrast Levels: Plasma TVs, technically, are known to have greater contrast levels than LCD TVs, however many see LCD TVs as being more vibrant, which seems connected to contrast, at least in the mind of most viewers.

Cost

LCD TVs are generally a little more expensive than plasma TVs when talking about the larger sizes. Prices for both, however, are coming down rapidly.

As for which brand to choose, the top brands I believe are sony, LG and samsung in that order for LCD tvs. for more info go to

I think you might be asking a lot there; if you want small you ain't going to necessarily get big facilities. However, there are some very small top-boxes around nowadays which you could stash in a cupboard and forget about - especially if you have one of the following mounted underneath the cupboard.

Have a look at the link.

I haven't watched TV in years. I absolutely abhor the "idiot lantern". It's like this mesmerizing audio/video brain numbing rectangle of uselessness.....said the laptop junkie. :) ----I agree fully! Television is an addictive mind warping bit of technology for sheep. It's bigger, it's better, it's more advanced....oh ya the giant flat screen with surround sound is the ultimate entertainment device. I dunno know, my inner self just senses a mass mind control issue where television is concerned.

would not have a TV in kitchen..you cook there grease is airborne..goes into the back of your TV...you switch it on(or off) and you have a nice little spark..igniting minute amounts of grease/fat...off you go out..when you return your house is a bit burnt..worse you go to bed and that happens? oh? doing chips for tea?...use a deep fat fryer.with a thermostat....not a chip pan...
