SO i just bought a really nice 32" LCD flat panel for my bedroom, and honestly, even though it's not that big, it looks HUGE in my room and i love watching movies on it...they look 50x bigger and it feels more like im in the cinema. My tv is an RCA 720p LCD HDTV, but when i read the specifications it says that the compatible input formats are 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i. I don't have a blu ray player yet, i just have a standard dvd player but it can upscale my DVD's to HD (1080p) quality via my HDMI cable. Also, I have the resolution on my DVD player set to 1080p. Since my TV is only 720p, and my dvd player is putting out 1080p, how does that work? Am i really getting HD picture? When i press the 'info' button on my tv when im watching a dvd it tells me its in 1080p so im really confused. I don't see how a 720p tv can play 1080p picture. I really want to get a blu ray player soon, but I don't know if it will make a difference. Do you think it will? Thanks!

Your 720p display will give you a fine HD picture with any HD input, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p. The INFO button is telling you the resolution of the source, not how it's presented on your screen. Your screen has 720 horizontal rows of active pixels, and that's how it's going to be displayed to you, regardless of the resolution of your HD source.

It may say 1080p but your tv is only capable of recieving a 720p signal. All upscaling dvd players can do 1080p but the truth is it is not showing in 1080p because only a blu ray does that and it will just black out your tv when you try to play a blu-ray at 1080p. Hope this helps you.

You're tv is really playing at 720p, its only accepting the signal from the hdmi cable, which is why it says 1080p. If you buy a blu ray player i promise you that you will be awed by the new picture, it will be 100 times better than and upscaled dvd.

Your TV is 720p/1080i and it down converts any 1080p signal sent to it to whatever it can display (720p or 1080i).

Your TV also works just fine to display an old 480i standard def signal because your TV up converts it to 720p/1080i. It doesn't change the input signal in any way. It just has the intelligence designed in to take those 480 lines and figure out how to fill in the additional scan lines.

720p and 1080i are both high def standards and in fact, broadcast high def TV is broadcasted in one of these two formats. A 1080p TV has similar intelligence built in and somehow figures out how to add those extra lines.

>When i press the 'info' button on my tv when im watching a dvd it tells me its in 1080p<

It is just telling you what the source signal is.

It is capable of 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i.
