Question:
Can I use a LED TV bought in Italy in the UK?

I'm thinking about buying a Philips LED TV at Mediaworld here in Milan, Italy and then taking it to the UK when I go to University in September. Would I encounter any trouble with the PAL systems, voltage levels and TV license? To be honest, I only want to run my laptop and Xbox 360 on it.
Also, would I have any trouble taking it over on a plane? I'm almost convinced it would be more ideal to buy one over there..
Thanks

"You'll need a TV licence since it's equipment capable of receiving TV pictures - but you need one anyway since your PC can view Internet TV. If it can do Y!A, it needs a licence."

I can't believe I read this stuff here.

A TV licence is required for any property where equipment is used to receive or record live broadcast TV programmes. It is properties that are licensed and NOT equipment.

Just because you own a car doesn't mean you need a driving licence.

Are you on commission by the BBC? Falsely telling people that if they own a web enabled PC they automatically need a TV licence?

Edit: Here's another one... just because you own a PC that happens, completely coincidentally, to connect to the internet that does not mean you need a TV licence. People have a perfectly lawful right to use non-televised web content without a licence. Looks like the Beeboids are out in force tonight.

By TV Licensing's own admission "You don’t need a TV Licence to own or possess a television set. However, if you use it to watch programmes as they are being shown on TV then you need a TV Licence in order to do so." That being the case what on earth makes you think you'd need one to own a laptop?

You can take it and use it.

You will need a UK plug adapter, or compatible UK cord. Voltage is fine.

Technically you need a licence only if you are actively receiving live TV with it, but advice is to get a license to keep the TV License authority off your back. AFAIK, universilty students can get a TV license at a discount. You can pay quarterly for a license as well.

You can probably receive broadcast channels if the TV has a compatible DVB-T tuner, but may not get all the Freeview features.

My personal advice is to buy a TV when you get there, and to keep the TV license people off yout back, a tunerless video display, called a monitor.

If it has an analogue tuner, that won't work in the UK. (If you are in a UK region that still has analogue TV, you'd get a picture but no sound - but they're switching the lot off next year). If it has a digital tuner (DVB/T) you can set it up to receive Freeview SD, but probably not Freeview HD (that's a bit of a non-standard kludge). Provided it has the right sockets on it, there'd be no problems using it as a monitor for your laptop or Xbox.

You'll need a TV licence since it's equipment capable of receiving TV pictures - but you need one anyway since your PC can view Internet TV. If it can do Y!A, it needs a licence.

If it's in a box that comes within the maximum hand luggage size, you can take it into the cabin with you. Airport security will want you to unpack it so they are sure what it is. If it's too big, you can put it in your hold luggage, but pack it well - I'm sure you've seen what they do to luggage at the airport.

i will start with the tv license,,

you do NOT need a tv license if you own a tv

so if you do NOT connect an aerial lead to your tv, that means you can NOT receive LIVE tv pics which means you do NOT need a tv license BUT you have got a problem, your laptop can receive live tv shows and you will need a tv license for that ,,

i didn't have a tv license for over 7 years due to i didn't watch tv,, i just watched dvd's or play on my ps2 and i even had the tv inspectors in my flat checking my tv over looking for any tv pics and they didn't due to my aerial lead was NOT connected up and i did NOT get a fine all they said that they will get in contact with the head branch and tell them that i do NOT need a tv license,

but with you having a laptop its NOT that easy to get away with it,, due to most laptops can receive live tv programmes with a few taps on the keyboard you could watch eastenders on a monday evening and that's when you need a tv license and the tv inspectors will check inspect the laptop and if the can find a live tv programme which is broad-casted in the uk and is shown on the laptop at the same time,, you will get a court summons and could be fined up to £1000

you shouldnt get any problems with the voltage (i think italy is the same has the uk but got different sockets) and the pal system is the same

im not sure about the plane,, i know that you will have to pay extra for it but i dont know how much that would be

beeboid PMSL the only beeboid is YOU i never had a tv license for over 7 yrs and your calling me a beeboid,, you fail big style, whats it like to pay for numerous repeats and crappy tv over the years,,

also when you have tv inspectors in your house and you have got a laptop, they will check it and IF the laptop can receive LIVE UK tv shows you will get fined for NOT having a tv license,, having a tv with NO aerial lead connected wont,,

thumbs down PMSL ,,, YOU DO NOT NEED A TV LICENSE IF YOU DO NOT WATCH LIVE TV and like i said

The legal requirement for a TV Licence is not for the ownership of a television set or laptop, but for the installation and use of such equipment for television reception. Part 4 of the Communications Act 2003 provides for a system of TV licensing and makes it an offence to install or use a television receiver without a valid licence.

LED TV's should be fine as most are designed to work in different countries.

Also don't listen to the idiots that are going on about a BBC TV Licence, you only need one of those if you watch 'live' television feeds. Unfortunately some people are stuck up the BBC's backside so like to throw it's TV Licence into everything
