I used to be fairly aware of what an LCD television's pros/cons were compared to a plasma but these new super flat LED televisions seem to be the best of both worlds. Can someone out there explain to me the pros/cons of the LED tvs compared to LCD/plasma? Thanks!

LED TV Technology Pros and Cons

by Robert Wiley

PROS

The viewing angle on LCD Televisions with LED back lighting has improved dramatically to plasma-like levels of 75 degrees with no contrast level degradation on some of the best ones.

The black levels on the best new LED TVs has improved to plasma like black levels while contrast levels still lag the best plasmas buy hundreds of post calibration points

Brightness on LED based LCDs is better than the traditional flourescent bulbs

LED TVs will have better consistency of color information over time than traditional LCDs

LED backlit Televisions should in theory have a better lifespan than traditional LCD TVs or plasmas.

CONS

LED TVs with local dimming use more energy than traditional LCDs. It's not much, about 100W for a particular size range.

LED Televisions with discreet backlighting can have lots of dimensional depth to the cabinet. We recently reviewed one with a 6" depth to the cabinet – making it less wall mount friendly.

LED TVs are quite a bit more expensive than traditional LCD TVs. See our article titled "LED TV – Is it worth it?" or our "LED vs LCD" coverage.

One thing to keep in mind, LED TVs are LCD TVs. They just use a different type of back lighting than conventional LCD TV's Traditionally, LCD TVs are lit using CFLs (Compact Florescent Lights). Most commonly found in the new energy efficient coil light bulbs you can find at the hardware store.

LED's use LCD Panels, but instead of using CFLs as a back light, it uses LEDs. Even within LED LCD TV's, there are two flavors: Local Dimming and Edge Lit. Edge LED's are very thin, about a few centimeters. They use special techniques to bend light on the back of the TV to produce the back light. Local Dimming LED TV's are a bit thicker, but produce a much greater contrast ratio than the Edge Lit LEDs and CFLs.

No to the Pros of LED TV's. They don't get as hot. Edge Lit ones are much thinner. They have a much better picture since they usually uses high end LCD panels. The Local Dimming screens produce better color and contrast ratio due to the local LED's shutting off.

Now the cons. Price. They are currently the top end of the TV maket as far as price goes. Local Dimming LEDs can produce a so called "Blooming" effect. This comes when there is a bright object next to a very dark object.

There are many more pro's than con's. The question is this, do want a better picture or a bigger screen with more features? And does the thickness matter. That is the question. If I had the cash, I would say go for the LED's.

They are superior to LCD and Plasma they have a very high contrast ratio much higher than Plasma that gives you darker dark colors and brighter brights like Plasma and they don't need the extra care like Plasma and pretty much have the idiot proof quality of LCD just in the manner of you don't have to put extra care like Plasma, they cost a lot more but from the quality of the picture i have seen why would anyone want to go theaters to pay for a movie if they owned a LED TV?,i own a Plasma and i don't go pay to see movies at theaters anymore but i want an LED TV that is next for on my list for me to get one.I see many other talk of LED like they aren't great at all i wonder if they actually stopped and toyed with one i love Plasma but my seeing and toying with an LED those are the next generation of TVs to me.

The latest developments in Hi Def TV will need more than large plasma currently delivers.

Look into the high end S-IPS panels. If you can afford them I think you will want to go for one of those rather than plasma.

The link below gives you a list of current high quality screens and links to further information relating to the different types.

ok, you're enjoying on a x-field, in different words, your console can´t even help the 1080p. meaning having a 1080p television isn't necessary in case you in basic terms are going to play x-field on it. ninety 9% of Xbox video games help 480p, so as that they run in 640x480. this suggests the 720p television would be in basic terms fantastic for you. And, in case you will purchase your self a clean television, decide for the Panasonic plasma TXP sequence, with the VIERA technologies. It´s in basic terms the superb television for gaming. desire this helps!
