Wow - what a bunch of bad answers.

Look - Monster used fear tactics about shielding to sell analog cables for years.

But HDMI is digital and the wires are twisted pair as well so it rejects analog noise rather well even without shielding.

You do NOT get any more shielding with a $100 cable than a $40 cable. It's just junk-science used by Monster.

There ARE some issues with cheap cables. They do not work for runs pushing 15 ft and I would never install a cheap cable in-wall. But for surface runs and short runs - the less expensive cables tend to do as well as the more expensive ones.

And Monster - one of the guys whos name is on the patent for the HDMI cable walked out of a lecture at last years CES show shaking his head over the president of Monster talking about their new line of 'speed rated' HDMI cables and how they were going to scare consumers into future-proofing their investment of a $150 cable. - It's total marketing BS - but Monster is good at it.

The difference is shielding. Let me try to explain. Sometimes when you stand under outside electrical wires, you can hear a low hum. That's energy escaping from the wires. Just like HDMI cables..cheapies have poor shielding and your TV signal escapes. The better the shielding the better your TV picture will be so there you have it ..a good HDMI cable should cost you about $70.00

We just bought a new Digital TV last week. My son who really really knows about this stuff and works for a major computer firm advised us to get an "x treme HD cable" go to " www.XtremeMac.com"

U need a good (and expensive:(() cable for picture in 1080p resolutions , for 5.1 or more sound, in environment with plenty of other electricals (shelding is important) and for a big TV and big distance. For small TV with poor resolution, standard sound, short distance - u can use cheap one and it will do the job. I recomend monster1000 - the best u can get so far:)

There is no real need to buy the expensive ones. They are pretty much a ripp off for right now. For the basic user, you don't need those expensive ones. It starts to matter when you are cabling for long distances and using higher than 1080p.
