I am going to buy my husband a TV for Christmas. It needs to be 42" to fit the space we have. I am torn between a Panasonic 42" Plasma, or a Visio 42" LCD. Both are the exact same cost. Does anyone have any good input to either TVs? We have an old 1990's very small TV - so anything will be an upgrade!

There will be no games played on it, only TV and movies. The room it will be in has one sliding glass window/door (which has blinds to shut out the light when needed).
Thanks! :)

I'd say to go with the Panasonic. If you aren't going to be playing games then it is OK to get a plasma. Visio is great, but still a lower end TV. Go with the Panasonic.

Warning: This is a warning you are not gonna get from the dealers or the manufactures. LCDs have very fragile, very breakable PLASTIC screens. Screens because there are two. The "inner" screen of my 7 mos. old Sony Bravia 42" is broken. Broken by a 34 lb., 3year old throwing an empty plastic cup. The screens are plastic because they can be and it prevents the screen from being reflective. It also makes them CHEAPER to make. No warranty, no repair. If you have children or children visit, do not buy LCDs.

Plasma have a glass screen like all other TVs except LCDs. Both are cheap to operate depending on where you live: 3-41/2 cents/hour for plasma and 2-3 cent/hour for LCD.

Plasma is better 42" or larger and in dark rooms or basements and for viewing sports. Most plasma brands also have anti-glare coatings. When I can get another $2000 together I will get plasma.

Whatever you do, DON'T, DON'T!! buy a PLASMA TV!!! Their life span is the same as 3 hamsters, in great health!!! LCD is a much better deal!!! PLASMA TV'S are disposable!! CHECK it out!!! In 10 years, they're headed for the LANDFILL!!!

Plasma is better, but it doesnt work so well in a bright room.

plasma offeres better bang for your buck.

i would avoid Vizio they are a low end company.

i would also consider Samsung's LED DLPs for value as well, but they will be about 13-14" thick.
