Question:
Can a TV have an in-built freeview HD tuner?

I'm interested in the Sony 32 inch BX320 Series BRAVIA LCD TV and have looked on their website for specs: no mention of the in-built HD Tuner being freeview. But when I look at reviews people are saying it has one - I thought only set top boxes and PVRs could use freeview tuners... I want to avoid freeview due to limited ad skipping functions so wouldn't buy this TV if it has FreeView...but I do have the Topfield 7100+ which has 2 FreeView HD tuners that I do all my recording through - would this override the freeview limitations of the in-built freeview tuner (if it is actually an inbuilt freeview Tuner!). Thanks for any help.

I think some TVs have an in-built HD tuner that would be compatible with not just Freeview, but other things too.

The built in HD Freeview is only the tuner part of the television set. You need an aerial for this exactly the same as you would for any other television set. To get reliable and clear Freeview you need a good outdoor aerial. An indoor one will not be sensitive enough to guarantee good reception and a 'booster' is nearly always a waste of time and money. When you have spent a lot of money on your television set it would be false economy to make do with a cheap and nasty aerial arrangement. A local professional installer will supply and fit the perfect aerial and new downlead for you to guarantee excellent Freeview HD reception to get the best from your telly. They charge about £120-£140 depending on the size of aerial that is needed to go on your roof. Note that there is NO SUCH THING as a "digital aerial". This is just an advertising "puff" to push up the price. Don't get conned by anyone who tries to tell you different. All tv aerials designed for analogue or digital terrestrial television work in exactly the same way. The only difference between them is size; and for good tv reception size matters! You cannot use a satellite dish to receive any Freeview transmissions. The satellite system works on a different set of frequencies to terrestrial television so the "LNB" box in the middle of the dish won't respond to them. Also, the Sky dish is pointing up to the satellite and your Freeview aerial has to be pointing to your local tv transmitter mast.

Yes, most new TV have the HD tuner fitted as standard now, for example the Samsung LED 6 series

is fully HD compliant. However, you'll never get add skipping on a TV. If you need add shuffle, use the Bush DTR which has a 2 minute shuffle facility which I find excellent.

Yes, the inbuilt freeview tuner will be a freeview tuner

There's a number of TV's with Freeview HD (terrestrial) built in http://freeview.co.uk/HD/Products and a few Freeview/Freesat HD (satellite) TVs http://www.freesat.co.uk/products/hd-tv-range . The UK uses the same standards as Oz i.e. DVB-T and DVB-S.
